Dan Hannebery should concentrate on getting back to his peak form. His fantastic leadership qualities didn't compensate for his measly 18 midfield possession average at Sydney the last 2 seasons - and they were happy to see him go.

We have enough home-grown leaders. He needs to get back to his best, and until he does - he should let our real leaders, such as Steele, etc, do all the leading - and he can follow.

We should never sell ourselves short (or be so desperate to pay overs).

The last time we were desperate and sold ourselves short - we ended up with Blight as our coach.

Our leaders need to earn their keep, and perform on the field - otherwise they need to make way.

Yes, Dan needs get back to his AA standard or close but he has apparently been a leader since Day 1 at RSEA Park. Players listen to him and follow him. He was the VC at the Swans last year which is a club all about supreme culture and leadership. Surely that tells you something. Making Dan a VC (which is what I am hoping they do) is not desperation and/or selling the club short at all. We lacked leadership since Montagna and Riewoldt retired and Dan is helping fill that gap.

He's only just been traded in, but that's not a good enough reason to keep him away from a VC position.
He was VC at the Swans, he's already a commanding voice at our club.

We've all been in a workplace where an outsider is brought into a supervisory position, as well as manager.
He doesn't need to wait, he can be co-captain or VC, great fit.

never really liked co captains. I dont think Dan needs a title to be an effective leader. Truth is we need to build atleast a dozen leaders, that what great teams that have sustained success do.

Hannebery averaged 25 possessions in 2017.

He averaged 18 possessions in 2018 due to injury but was still Swan's best in the finals.

It is a an arrogant attitude to think a 3 times AA and VC of the Swans should not have a senior leadership position at the saints.

Swans are as happy losing Dan to us as they were Membrey, Dempster and Sneids.

7 now

What makes you think we have faith in the decisions of the administration and coaches?

If and when he earns the respect of Saints fans for his deeds as a Saints player I'll happily vote for him to be VC and part of a leadership group. Let's just assess how he goes before you jump up and down.

Half a sentence is jumping up and down. Ok for starters. 🙄

Plus Dan has been in the Swans leadership group already (VC last year) and has the expierence. His leadership since Day 1 at RSEA Park has been outstanding which has been confirmed by many players, coaches and staff. He already has my respect as a 10 year player and triple AAA which no one on our list is btw. Chuck him in the leadership group now - even as a VC.

Is the irony of this really lost on you Tedaway?

You were up in arms over a nickname that had sexual connotations on urban dictionary, but you issue a nickname to a poster that also has sexual meaning on your same reference point.

Hypocrisy or stupidity?

OK, my memory didn't serve me well (but it doesn't alter anything) - so he's dropped from 30 possessions down to 25 in 2017 and then down to a very average 18-19 midfield possessions in 2018.
So he's been on a downward trajectory - and, so I'd like to think that he'd be fully concentrating on getting himself fit, getting over his injuries (groin, hamstring, etc) and back to his peak form before he takes on any leadership role.
If he gets back to his best or near his best - let's say, back to his 25-30 possessions average - and he can throw his body into hard contests once again, etc... then sure, he'd deserve a leadership role (and this way he would be inspiring by example).
But not before then, IMHO.

If inspiring play is the reason a person gets to be a leader, honestly I have rarely felt inspired by the play of our current captain. He's loyal, consistent and plays as hard as he can, but inspiring? Nay. Nein. Nada. No. Yox. 没有.Ingen.Hindi.όχι.

If it’s broke, then fix it!

Our club leadership wise was stuffed last year in EVERY aspect both on and off field.

To keep Gears as skipper would be madness.

Hanners is the man, it’s a new start.

Sorry Gears.

Saintspremier wrote ... (referring to our captaincy under Geary - and the need for Hannebery to be made captain)
If it’s broke, then fix it!

But, Hannebery is also broke, saintspremier, and needs to be fixed.

Let's clear something up ...
I think the point is, we would all agree with Dan assuming a leadership role (even the captaincy, why not?) if and when the time is right.
Right now, some just feel he should concentrate on getting back to his best (and his body right) - prioritise that first. This is what you'd expect a good leader to do.

In the meantime, he can apply and demonstrate his leadership qualities on himself (and be his own mentor and star student) - by getting himself back to his best form.
If he can do that (return to his best), he will deserve to be captain - he can skip the vc and subordinate leadership roles (I think we would all agree with this).

If the poll is restated as ... "Should Hannebery be captain/co-captain, if he gets himself back to his best form?" - I think you will have a 100% resounding "Yes" response, to that.
Some think he is captain material right now - but, I think all of us would agree that Hannebery will be the man for the role if and when the time is right (as I've explained above).

Chuck him in the leadership group now - even as a VC.
The Swans were prepared to 'chuck him' out while they could still get something in return

Just reported on channel 7 in Melbourne that Hannebery has torn his hammy again. The signs were there but somehow St Kilda knew better! Obviously it's still early in the year but most people outside the footy club including some of us Saints fans without rose coloured glasses, would not have been surprised with another setback the way his body has let him down lately

I reckon chuck out ALL of our coaching panel from the last few years if this decsion bites us on the backside.

Plus; Lethers to hand in his resignation if his Xaverian network inspired recruit is a failure in 2019.

It goes without saying, that Finnis has not inspired confidence with the way the last 4 years have turned out. OUT!

Just saw on news he has a hammy tear, not serious but at his age and with his body.....
Until he strings some gamea together it's a bit of a moot point regarding captaincy and leadership
