I think we're being conned - There are two Con Gorozidis on here now!!
Con Gorozidis wrote:It is fairly obvious the club already knows Freeman is a long shot which is why we went and recruited a handful of pacy players last year.

Nothing to see here. Minor hiccup.

Still a strong tip for the Brownlow.

It's (still) all rosy. According to LL the club says 3-4 weeks.

But you're right Enrico, when the club finally says Freeman - 2 weeks, then we know it's all over the bloke.

I feel for Freeman but he was a massive risk that has backfired and won't end well. St Kilda have plenty of these cases. Was told that the club picked up in 2010 some gun kid from North, Jesse Smith, that had chronic hamstring problems and never came good. You think they would learn but these decision keep costing the club.

The drug cheats picked up Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti in the rookie draft (and other guys that show plenty) after some shrewd, measured recruiting and they are already touted as a top 4 in 2018. McDonald-Tipungwuti is a gun and heading for elite status in the eyes of many at that club. We continue to flounder and studying our list management since 2009 is not hard to see why.
Be careful Stk. The last poster to 'question' our recruiting department was summarily marched out of this forum and shot.

In terms of our recruiting of the likes of Jesse Smith and Nathan Freeman, regardless of whether these blokes end up making it or not, I hope our club continues with these sort of selections. High reward for very little cost. Be bold Saintas! :D

For example, Smith cost us pick 50-something. Talent-wise he was arguably the best player on Nuff Nuff's list. If his ankle had stood up, I'd argue that we would have won back-to-back flags in 2009/10, and have been right in the mix again in 2011. Yep, he was that good. As others have pointed out, a fit Freeman is just the sort of player we need. If he comes good our current team will be substantially and strategically improved.

(Not exactly the same, but there're similarities... for this reason I really wanted that 23 year old AA gun, but out of favour at the dog pound bloke, whom the Drug mob picked up for a steal. :( )

So I hope we keep taking these punts. Coz the law of averages suggests that if we persist, some of will actually work out. Be bold Saintas! :D

Tend to agree D-Mac...and over a long period we haven't actually taken too many risky picks, but who was the last one to actually work out? Gardiner?

Jesse Smith had a chronic ankle issue.

Freeman was picked after missing his first season through injury and Collingwood wanted to retain him.

Every recruiting decision is a risk but it’s all hindsight.

Freeman had two seasons at Collingwood. 2014 and 2015.
They were only offering one more year.
We offered three.

2018 is his fifth season.

What's hindsight about thinking we can fix a medical issue a better resourced club couldn't?
Just like Lovett, I didn't know exactly how he would stuff up just knew that there was a greater than normal chance of him doing so!Let's leave the left field recruiting decisions to teams like Hawthorn who have all those flags to placate the masses with when or if they come undone.

We obviously had to offer him more than Colonwood was offering.

It will be interesting to see if the club keeps him on after this year.

How are we supposed to get value if we’re not prepared to take a risk.

Anyway, comparing him to Smith and Lovett is dumb.

SaintPav, it's about taking punts on players with known and tried pasts that have not worked out. St Kilda have done this a lot basing hope on wishful thinking rather than brutal facts. Comparison is justified. Will be really jacked seeing the drug cheats knocking on the top 4 this year because they have been a lot smarter and proactive with their recruiting using lesser picks.

I honestly don’t blame Jax for not posting here given all the tripe he cops.

St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis has confirmed luckless recruit Nathan Freeman will undergo hamstring surgery and faces up to 12 weeks before even being considered for a senior debut.

“Surgery means he won’t be running for about four weeks and then from that point there he will need to work into fitness, so it could be about Round 4 or 5 before he comes back in the VFL,” he told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

Given Freeman has not played a senior game since being drafted in 2013, the odds he does not play senior football are shortening by the week. Freeman’s three-year deal ends at the end of this season.

A six-week block of games after returning in Round 5 means the earliest the 22-year-old could be considered for senior footy would be mid-year. By then the relative success, or failure, of the team could dictate what chance he does, or does not, get.

We can always send him to Lourdes. A literal Hail Mary. I think it might be curtains. Still, if you don't take a risk, you get no reward. I still believe he was worth the second round pick. Pity it hasn't come off, because the boy had the potential to be another Danger. What a cruel and fickle game AFL is.

Loving the transparency on this. Thought it was only a procedure that involved cleaning up some scar tissue, now this!

An information asymmetry, clearly.

Jaxons told us the truth.

tony74 bullshitted as usual and gave us the pollyana media spin. AR also bullshitted in his AFL.com.au interview.
