Inspirational vintage film

Post: # 1709690Post Sanctorum »

Lazy summer days so in search of some uplifting stuff about the Saints, came across the following film on YouTube, if you haven't seen it you're in for a treat!

I imagine this is shown to the team, especially the young blokes, before the start of the season, to complement the sort of stories that the likes of club legends like Cowboy Neale, Neil Roberts etc can relate to the players in order to cement the great culture of St Kilda FC.

Some great historic footage there. What's the first song they sing in the rooms afterwards?

Sounds like ' stout hearted men '

Be nice if somewhere they still had all the footage they shot in the club rooms.

Had not heard about nor seen that before, many thanks for posting!
One aspect of tradition that I seriously don't like was how they swapped jumpers with the Collingwood players. It just does not look right seeing Doc in those colours!

Agree, Stout Hearted Men.

Thankyou for posting my Christmas present. Doc came over as quite articulate. How about Siera, talking away in the armchair with fag in hand and still blowing in the room after the GF - still with fag in hand! Another player gone to soon - off to Perth at the end of '68 and a great loss. Brian Gleeson in the rooms with the premiership cup - all great stuff.

Wonderful old footage. Just sooo long ago and it really is a poor effort by the club and all its various administrations never to have won another premiership since then. Just have to hope that it can all click in 2018..but as Sainters, we all live in hope.

Agree, Stout Hearted Men.
Following is the chorus from "Stout Hearted Men":

Give me some men who are stout-hearted men,
Who will fight, for the right they adore,
Start me with ten who are stout-hearted men,
And I'll soon give you ten thousand more.
Shoulder to shoulder and bolder and bolder,
They grow as they go to the fore.
Then there's nothing in the world can halt or mar a plan,
When stout-hearted men can stick together man to man.

If you enjoyed the doco that I posted earlier in this thread, then I'll guarantee that the following one, from AFL Media, really captures the spirit of St Kilda '66, but be warned, keep a box of tissues handy!

Thanks for posting Sanctorum.

What a great doco. As much for the feel of the time as for the footy history. It was a different country then.
Some gems there. Sierakowsi sitting in an armchair (love the 60's decor) having a casual fag whilst he discusses the Doc. Water skiing the day before the GF. All wearing filth jumpers after the game. Snapshot of a different culture and time.

The Jeans era as coach (1961 to 1976) was by far the most successful in St Kilda's history.

As related in the club's DVD "Heaven and Hell - The Saints From 1897 to 2003", Allan Jeans won the coaching job for 1961 by just one vote of the Board, and he immediately took the team into the finals (from 6th in 1960), with sustained success until they won the Premiership in 1966. By any definition he was a master coach - in the list of AFL coaches with more than 450 games he is 2nd only to Tom Hafey with a record of 61.9%.

I really hope that the club recocgnise our most successful coach by erecting a statue in his honour in front of the clubhouse as part of the redevelopment of Moorabbin!

1971 was the last time that Jeans took his Saints to a Grand Final. It is one of a handful of classic Grand Finals, and typified the physical and mental toughness of St Kilda teams developed by Allan Jeans, which he subsequently did with considerably more success at Hawthorn - 5 Premierships.

I have dug up one more documentary that encapsulates the spirit of the Saints in the Jeans era, and it commemorates the 40th anniversary of the 1971 GF that St Kilda lost to Hawthorn by just 7 points. It contains some wonderful observations from the hard men in that game - Carl Ditterich, Cowboy Neale (Saints), Don Scott, Leigh Matthews (Hawks). Both John Kennedy (coach) and David Parkin (Captain) recall this as the toughest game they were ever involved in.

Going into the GF, Hawthorn FF Peter Hudson needed just 4 goals to equal the AFL record of 150 goals in a season held by Bob Pratt (South Melbourne), 5 to beat it. In the days before the game, when discussing how the Saints would try to keep Hudson from kicking a bag of goals, someone in the room said: "he can't kick goals if he's unconscious!", which caused some mirth.

Check the video to see who it was, and how it played out...

Enjoy!!
