We need a champion or two!
Over the journey it seems that we have regularly had a champion ot two on our list. Perhaps even three on occasions.
Who are our next champions now that Roo has retired? Will it be Billings? Perhaps Gresham?
Will it be a free agent or perhaps someone else ?
I have compiled the following list of champions (only an opinion):
1960's: Roberts, Baldock, Stewart, Morrow, Ditterich and Smith
1970's: Smith, Barker
1980's: Barker, Lockett, Winmar
1990's: Lockett, Winmar, Harvey, Burke and Loewe
2000's: Riewoldt, Hayes
2010's: Hayes, Riewoldt
Apologies if I have missed another champion or two?
Having a champion or two allows us to dream, even if we don't win the ultimate prize.
Going from one end of the ground to the other at Moorabbin...
Watching from behind the goals, Plugger outmuscling his opponent.
Would he kick 10 or perhaps 13 today? How many did Dunstall kick?
Is it a dream? Could he even kick 170-200 goals in a given season?
Will that precision kicking guide us to our second premiership cup?
Winmar will surely help... How about that kid Harvey?
It didn't seem to matter whether it was wet, misty or cold at Linton Street. Those days were magic and will live on forever in our hearts.
It has been a pleasure to dream; to watch our champions over the years.
Bring on the next champion or two!

Carlisle will be our champion.
Can't see anyone else stepping up.
Billings is prone to going missing under pressure.
Has zero DNA shared with Hayes.
Sure he has sublime skill, has it in spades,
will not help when he has ZERO hardness and won't do the extra tough stuff that Lenny used to do when it was needed.

Billings played as a 21 year old all year... in that comparison Lenny played as 22 year old
Billings looks fine to me... will be a star..

When the new draftees came to the club I was waiting for one of them to say “I can’t believe I’ll be training with....” but I couldn’t finish the sentence.

Re: We need a champion or two!
12 months ago , I had my doubts on Billings becoming a star. Thought he was soft.
If you watched him closely in 2017, his tackling got better as the year progressed and by year end he was hard at the contest. His tackles stuck. He won plenty of hs own hard balls. Once he fixes his goal kicking (which I’m confident he will in 2018) he will come roaring into AA calculations.
Just need one or 2 others (Steele ?) to step up.

Re: We need a champion or two!
you have roo and lenny two decades but not Harvey? easily a champ for more of the 2000s than Hayes was in the 2010s, or the 2000s. Taking nothing away from Hayes.leighsaintsince66 wrote:Over the journey it seems that we have regularly had a champion ot two on our list. Perhaps even three on occasions.

Steele spent the last preseason in a moonboot, I think.Zed wrote:12 months ago , I had my doubts on Billings becoming a star. Thought he was soft.

Had a foot problem.
Young enough to stack on muscle and improve his fitness- at that age they're still growing. Teenage body almost.
So improvements are massive.

Best on ground playing with one eye for almost the entire match after the other one was bruised shut doesn't cut it for you ?WellardSaint wrote:Carlisle will be our champion.

Took the words out of my mouth. I remember speaking to a guy, who was in his 90s, about 10 years ago and he said StKilda has always had champion players but never had a champion team. Who were the Bulldogs champions in 2016?skeptic wrote:Let me be a first...

Billings will be an absolute star. I'm biased but I reckon he will be better than Bontempelli.
