Second best FF and CHF

Post: # 1708622Post whiskers3614 »

Thanks for getting this concept started BFUSA, makes a change from the usual off season stuff!
Hope you don't mind me starting this one.
Guess our best in the key forward posts are pretty obvious!
Was Loewe next best at both?
What about Gehrig, Rex Hunt and Barry Breen?
Pretty sure Doc was outside the 50 year limit.

Gehrig would be hard pressed to miss second best FF... he was a freaking ox in his prime. Few IMO could tear it apart like he could

And some erratic kicking blinds many to just how good Stewart Loewe was at his peak. Buckets was almost the perfect ruck rover for a while; he’d have these 25 possession games with a dozen marks (mostly contested), 10 hit outs and 4-5 goals. And he built his career playing alongside great forwards too.

Love the man. My favourite saint

Doc retired at the end of 1968 so qualifies. Forgetting all the love for Nick, possibly romantically enhanced due to his retirement, Doc was clearly our greatest CHF prior to the great blonde fellow. Nick's longevity in the game gives him the honours but, believe me, Doc was the reason I became a Saints supporter as a little kid. He wasn't dubbed Mr Magic on a whim, he was truly a magician.

Fraser's record fares better than all others to make him second behind Plugger. No mean feat. His ability to kick a bag rates him highly as does 2 Coleman Medals,

Breeny and Stewie's greatness can be measured by both playing 300 games in, arguably, the hardest position to play.

Where does George Young rate with his efforts from 75-78?

Loved George, would have him vying with Alan Davis for best medium forward.

George was pure silk. Wen back to the west too soon, unfortunately. A real star.

Too true.

The privilege of getting old but keeping your memory is being able to remember how great Baldock was.

Fraser Gehrig would be our second best FF. The mighty G Train was a joy to watch, not anywhere near as awesome as Plugger though. Riewoldt the second best CHF, I didn't see Baldock live, but the highlights I've seen are enough, he was the best.

Stewart Loewe is the most underrated player in the history of the game.
Continually tore games to shreds, and then busted them open late with what was the most incredible pack/contesting marking you’ll ever see in 20/80 contests. He was taken for granted. Was a freak

I think that he left on bad terms too. Left for family reasons, and I don't think the club made things easy for him(?) I hope that's been patched up now!

But, only played one more year. Did a knee, and was done at 30.

Oh, and George chose us over Australia. 125 in his second game for WA batting at number 5, but quit cricket to join the Saintas.
Approaches from Collingwood, St Kilda, and South Australian club Norwood followed, with the Saints being the successful bidders. “I was impressed with Saints coach Allan Jeans,” Young recalled. “And I never had reason to regret my decision.”
He also starred for Scotland in a famous 3-1 defeat of 'the Saxons'.

Absolute joke and travesty that George isn't in our Team of the Century!

The Doc should really be in a thread about the best half forward flanker - based on his height.

But short, over weight, slow. Left or right foot, dry or absolute glue-pot mud heap... made no difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqTC52I3HmQ

Check out the hanger over the enemy ruckman - and of course, landed on his feet like a cat. https://youtu.be/YXu-lgSV1Rw

The farewell. :( And Yabby saying that it was his policy to never name the best player he'd ever coached. However... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=444VenjqxLk

The book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bndmx6bylA

Our CHF is so hard to pick, but because of Baldock and Riewoldt having flanker-like attributes, I'd hapilly place them either side of Loewe.

Decent forward line.

Baldock - Loewe - Riewoldt
Milne - Lockett - Davis

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

My best forward line (that I've seen) is :-

Baldock - Riewoldt - Young
Milne - Lockett - Loewe

Very hard to argue against that!

Might be worth compiling a full team at the end of this
