New goalkicking coach - ex-Hawk Ben Dixon

Post: # 1702369Post shrodes »

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-10-04/s ... cking-woes
EX-HAWK Ben Dixon will join St Kilda as its goalkicking coach.

Former Sydney and Hawthorn player Ben McGlynn was in charge of those duties in 2017, when the Saints were one of the most inaccurate teams. On 12 occasions they kicked more behinds than goals.

St Kilda finished 11th with an 11-11 record, and a percentage of 96.9.

Dixon, who played 203 games with Hawthorn and kicked 282 goals, has previously worked with Collingwood in the same role.

We lost two games directly from poor goal kicking (West Coast and Port Adelaide).

Our conversion this year was the third worst in a season in the AFL era.

Had we won those two games, we would have finished 7th.

It's about time.

A 7th placed finished would have seen us play Port in Adelaide (as Port would have won one fewer game).

There was a fair chance we would have won that game and made it to the semi-final against GWS, who we had beaten this year.

Our inability to play finals can be solely attributed to poor goal kicking.

Halfway through the round 16 tigers game, we were *4th* on the live ladder. We are better than our ladder position showed. This is a fantastic recruitment which will hopefully solve one of our two biggest issues. Next issue, why we at times didn't turn up to games.

Pies were worse than us this year, but I believe Dixon was there in 2016 when they were 9th in goal kicking accuracy. They fell to 17th this year.

Another good way to get players to kick straight, is to drop then to the VFL. If we talk about inaccuracy costing games, that presumes lots of behinds would have been goals, and presumes the opposition didn't win the ball and go up their end for a score.

And five minutes after it was tweeted by Glenn McFarlane.
St Kilda has appointed highly-rated kicking coach Ben Dixon to address the goal-kicking issues that cost them finals spot. More @superfooty

We wouldn't have beaten Port - especially over there. Our record against Port has been absolutely appalling for years, and twice in recent history we have been ahead of them very, very deep into time-on of the final quarter and still handed them the points, both in Melbourne and in Adelaide.
We've hardly beaten them since 2000 anywhere.

I'm glad the club have highlighted our goal kicking as an area obvious concern which needs to be fixed though.

The club also need to get in a decent sports psychologist to address our pathetic efforts interstate as well. Still haven't beaten Sydney, Adelaide, Port Adelaide anywhere for years, or West Coast over in Perth. Until we get our preparation right when playing interstate and beat those sides we won't figure in finals.

So Josh Bruce running into goal straight in front will no longer hit the post from inside the goal square ?

In all seriousness, if he can improve Jack Billings, Paddy McCartin and Jack Lonie goal kicking by 50%, and get Tim Membrey back to being the dead eye he was in 2016 we will have a lethal forward line.

So what's this mean for Ben McGlynn - new role at Saints or ciao ciao ?

I can still remember Ben Dixon having to take a set kick after the siren ( V Carlturd )at the MCG to put Hawthorn in front and of course win the game. I can still see about five or six Blues players jumping up and down, waving their arms about frantically to put Dixon off the kick. Ben kicked dead-eye straight for the win! I'm no love of Hawthorn, but that day I was RAPT! I also think it was one of the times that Chris Connolly stepped into the coaches role, as Schwab was ill.

A very good appointment Saints! Kudos!

McGlynn wasn't a bad shot at goal either. I fear half of what Josh Bruce alone produced this year can't even be recreated, let alone trained to eradicate!

I had to look this up on youtube, Jiggster. He had ice in his veins when he took the shot. Carlton players were doing a "war dance" (as Sandy Roberts described it) whilst he was lining up for goal. Looks like we've hired the right man for the job.

Well at least the problem is being addressed.
But will it be eradicated?

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach others to teach. Where does that leave us? Perhaps we should've given the job to Loewey. Started off terrible, couldn't do, so would've been ideal to teach others as he improved along the journey. :D

Ben Dixon to put every St Kilda player through a rigorous technical exam over pre-season
JAY CLARK, Herald Sun

ST KILDA’S new goal kicking coach Ben Dixon will put every player at the club through a rigorous technical examination over the preseason.

The former Hawthorn sharpshooter turned down advances from Port Adelaide to help fix the Saints’ set shot woes which, in part, cost Alan Richardson’s men a finals berth last season.

The Saints were ranked second last in accuracy (45.5 per cent) in 2016 but have agreed to prioritise the area over summer training to help jump into the eight next year.
