Goddard and Paddy ready for FULL pre-season

Post: # 1698612Post parkeysainter »

They have both been curtailed by bad luck and injury but IMO, if both get on the park and fit for round 1 then they will make a decent difference to the side. Richo and the fitness staff need to get them right. I believe both are in their 4th season next year.

Fingers crossed the injuries and bad luck disappear in 2018. No pressure on you boys!! :D

Added to that. Just sign them up until the end of 2019 or 2020. It will give them some stability and confidence to get it right. The club needs to think big picture with both players.

At last. Some positivity from Con Negative Nuts or are you being smart? Probably the latter. Hard to tell with you sometimes.

Good news.

The natural development of Ross, Billings, Gresham, Dunstan, Webster, Steele and others will see us improve. Then if McCartin, Goddard and Freeman also emerge, that may catapult us into the Top 4, with or without landing a 'Big Fish'.

Can't when you get injured.

Actually, " Paddy and Hugh ready for a full preseason", is not a headline. "Hugh and Paddy COMPLETE A FULL PRESEASON." Now that would be worth a headline.

That's the one I'm waiting for, Prw. FWIW, Freezer is doing a nine week pre preseason with a specialist exercise physiology service. So far, so good, I'm told. Could be back well ahead of the rest when the actual preseason starts. We can only dream. What's that I hear you all say? We need a quick, explosive midfielder with good kicking skills? Where do we get one of those? Right in our own backyard. I just hope he hasn't missed too much already. I hope he still becomes the player he was always meant to be. If he does, we will advance our cause, greatly.

Firstly, give Paddy and Goddard a break. They will "hopefully" tear it up. Time well tell.

And I do agree about Freeman. He should debut this year if all goes well.

Very bullish about Paddy.

Is Freezer similar to Dangermouse?
Which current player would he be similar to?

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Nick Maxwell compared him to Dangerfield, or said he was a similar style of player. Just imagine. I'd settle for him being half as good. I saw him play in juniors a bit. He was a jet there. I know this is now men's footy and a lot of water (mainly muddy) has flowed under the bridge, but I was very excited when we initially got him.

I wouldnt mind seeing Paddy, HG and Freezer all tried up forward next year and using Bruce on a wing.
HF Freeman, HG, Billings
F Membrey, PM, Gresham
Bruce and HG to swap roles throughout the game giving us a decent marking target for kick outs. This also allows Membrey to actually play as a proper third tall instead of second and sometimes first. This means he'll sometimes get the third best defender so gets him off the chain.
Obviously forward pressure could be a problem with this line up but Freeman is quick and a pretty good tackler for his size. Gresh and Billings will only be stronger after another preseason. We could also rotate Freeman (slowly), Gresh and Billings into midfield. Dunstan, Steven, Acres to rest forward also as other options. Some new blood up forward may also help get over the yips.

That sounds like a great idea. Ideally Freeman moves to the wing by mid year, and either long or pick 7 or 8 is ready to excel.

I love to see a line up that looks something like:

FB Robo Brown Rice (I realise Geary will actually have this spot)
HB Webster Carlisle White / Rice
C Bruce Seb Sinclair
HF Billings Goddard Freeman
FF Membrey Paddy Gresham
R Steele Acres Longer Steven

INT Savage, Dunstan, Newnes Armo

Good to hear that they will have full training this off season but i have some thoughts
There is talk of Paddy switching to the back line which isn't a terrible idea, at least to start with. It will let him see the whole game laid out in front of him and learn how the ball comes into the fifty from a defenders point of view.

Hugh Goddard needs to work on he's speed and do it quickly (excuse pun) I saw him play a few times last year and he is so slow and huge turning circle. I'm hoping it was due to turf toe but I doubt he is the messiah many are hoping for

Freezer should be proud of what he has done to even make it this far but again he wasn't quick when I saw him play for Sandy last year. I am not sure if it is mental or just he hasn't keep his speed from pre injury days but it is a concern that his main weapon is no longer there. I'm hoping it returns. For speed focus on Ray Connellan. That kid has serious wheels

Lacks any of the power that Dangerfield's body brings along with that his speed.

Battle and Membrey in the midfield? Hickey at CHF? Coaches who think long term, plan to create a team with versatile players, and have strong leaders who can sell the message to the playing group have probably achieved half the battle. It's not just a matter of creating belief in the players minds, but you have to dare to be different and practise being bifferent. Which players are willing to sacrifice their personal game in the short term for the benefit of the team in the long term. Do we have leaders who are ambitious enough to be willing to forego a few stats for the sake of long term planning?

Can Paddy be our Mitch McGovern? Can Jake Carlisle play more games as our go to FF? I think we are are more likely to succeed when the opportunity presents itself if we have a plan B, C and D. Coaches that play safe might actually make it to the big dance if they have a wealth of talent, but I reckon the Ross Lyons of the world will always come second because you know what to expect.
