Acres last AFL game he had 9 disposals

I have no issue with him being made to earn his spot back. Dunstan too.

Acres will come in and play like a man that desperately wants to stay in the seniors
I heard Acres got 25 till half time when he was then rested - this might be false.

I am away and luckily was not able to view Friday night - but it was obvious from as soon as battle was named to be picked that Acres had to come in for a small - I am thinking Long - 3 teenagers in the team was just always going to be an issue ( Battle, long and assuming Gresham not 20 yet)
Last VFL game prior to today the stats sheet had him as having had 23 disposals before he was rested.

Last AFL game (against GC) stats sheet has him as having had 8 disposals.

But Sandy, surprisingly but superbly, defied it to claim an eight-point victory that coach Lindsay Gilbee declared their best of the season.

They led all the way at North Port Oval after elevated St Kilda rookie Rowan Marshall kicked two goals in the first four minutes of the match.

When Port finally got going and threatened to pinch the points in the final term, Marshall took an important mark in defence to turn the Borough back.

Gilbee had no need to holler for a Marshall. The big fellow was always there for him. But the Zebras may have to do without the right-footer this week. An AFL debut looms for the North Ballarat product.

“I think Rowan Marshall was outstanding today,’’ Gilbee said after the game.

“You can see why he got elevated on the list early in the week. If it’s not this week it will be next week, I’m sure he’ll get his opportunity really soon. He’s too good for this level, Rowan. He’s a very, very good player.
’’
Weickhardt went to Borough ball hog Eli Templeton and curbed his influence after quarter time.

Noone was playing his first game back at North Port since breaking his leg in last year’s finals. He was outstanding, particularly in the first half, floating in to take strong marks.

Hampton Rovers recruit Richie Atkins did his bit in defence too.

The Zebras also had a dominant ruckman in Jason Holmes on a day when its Development League team also knocked over Port.

The Borough had a rotten day. Players of the calibre of Anastasio, Lisle and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow dropped simple marks; a Robin Nahas handball to Templeton flew out of bounds; twice Port players spoiled each other in marking contests.

The mistakes piled up and had coach Gary Ayres wincing as he reflected on them after the match.

Ayres pulled more moves than a drunk in a singles bar, shifting Chris Cain to half back, Sam Dwyer and Hugh Sandilands to the forward line, and Lisle to defence.

“But I just felt it was one of those days where you don’t have a lot of control over the 23 individuals playing for you,’’ he said.
WHAT THE COACHES SAID

Lindsay Gilbee, Sandringham

“I challenged our guys at half time and especially at three-quarter time. We could hear their (Port’s) huddle, Gary Ayres revving them up, so I used that against our guys to say, OK, be aware that obviously they’re going to come out (hard). They’re a proud club, they’re a good footy team, they’re on top of the ladder for a reason. They were going to come out and really challenge us. And they did that. It obviously got hairy at the end but our composure late with our footy in our hands in regards to our contest and not coughing it up I thought was outstanding. They’re a good very side and we’re rapt to get the four points.’’

Acres was 6th best on ground - not the best; it's not number of votes, it's ranking.

Standout Zebras

Swingman Rowan Marshall continues to impress at Sandringham and proved pivotal in the Zebras’ win, earning much praise from VFL coach Lindsay Gilbee.

Elevated from the St Kilda rookie list this week, the 21-year-old kicked the first two goals of the game to finish with 17 disposals and six marks, while a crucial contested mark in the dying moments when the Borough was coming was a key moment.

Luke Dunstan again put his hand up for an AFL recall with 27 disposals, four tackles and a classy third quarter goal, while Blake Acres led the disposals with 29 copping a heavy tag all afternoon.

Nick O’Kearney continues to maintain consistency, finishing with 23 disposals and a team high seven tackles.

The next challenge

Sandringham’s confidence will be high following the win over Port Melbourne that could serve them well when they travel to Simonds Stadium to face Geelong next Saturday afternoon.

The Cats are a tough assignment at home and sit just outside the top eight, eager to feature in September as the run home draws near.

Nathan Wright got 5 or 6, anyone who saw the game, was he playing injured ?

Great highlights. I've been a fan of him since draft video was out. He can hit a target so well for a big bloke.

Stats around the sandy win
http://vfl.com.au/stats-central-sandys- ... ing-style/

STATS CENTRAL: SANDY’S SUFFOCATING STYLE

Sandringham’s eight-point victory over Port Melbourne at North Port Oval in Round 13 was one of the Peter Jackson VFL’s bigger surprise results so far in 2017.

Coming off three straight finals appearances and a 4-1 record to start the season, the Zebras had fallen away under new senior coach Lindsay Gilbee with six losses in their next seven games.

The high-possession style that carried them to an elimination-final victory over the Borough in 2016 has been missing for much of this season. Driven by the ability of now departed St Kilda-listed players Eli Templeton, Brodie Murdoch and Josh Saunders to find the ball in space and deliver it cleanly into the forward line, Sandringham ranked fourth in the VFL for average disposals and uncontested possessions last year as well as second for average marks and scores per inside-50.

In 2017 though, the Zebras rank in the bottom three teams for all those measures, while their disposal efficiency has fallen from 70.0 to 66.6 per cent – the lowest rate in the competition.

Funnily enough, off-season Port Melbourne recruits Templeton and Murdoch have helped the Borough transition from a primarily contested-ball-winning team to one more resembling how Sandringham potently played in 2016. In Saturday’s clash, they also contributed to their team’s +67 advantage in uncontested possessions and +42 advantage in uncontested marks.

But one thing the Zebras have excelled at this season is their work without the ball, ranking second in the VFL for tackles per game.

Sandringham won the tackle count by 15 against Port Melbourne, the pressure applied by Saints-listers Luke Dunstan (nine tackles), Blake Acres, Nick O’Kearney and Maverick Weller (eight each) helping restrict the Borough to 1.6 (12) in the first half – its lowest score at the long break since 2006 and its lowest at home since 1997.

Kade Answerth has laid the second-most total tackles in the competition (6.5 per game) in 2017, while fellow VFL-listers Myke Cook, Dylan Weickhardt and Jack Noone – in his two senior games back from a broken leg suffered in last year’s semi-final loss to Williamstown – all average four tackles.

It’s a fine way to adapt to less time with the ball in their hands.

How many chances has Acres had against Dunstab again?

We are kidding ourselves here play the kids ffs we don't have the quality nor depth to trouble the big boys and won't get that till we get games into these kids playing Acres emergency or seeing him rack up possies in VFL is wasting all our time

He'd get a game back in the west...
