Question about the Newnes incident
How come the guy wasn't reported?
Don't get me, I'm not suggesting that the Swans player was dirty or it was malicious or anything like that...
But the fact is, the Swans player turned to his side, bumped whilst going for the ball and made contact with the head.
I thought the head was sacrosanct?

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
Not sure what you were watching...
They both turned and braced for contact.
Side-on contact.
Jack was unlucky in that the impact shook him a bit more than the other guy,
resulting in the concussion.

I thought if you choose to bump, get someone high and they are knocked out you're in trouble?

They both went low for the ball. Newnes got collected with the hip. It wasnt a reportable offense

Newnes only got 80% side on.
Newnes got concussed because the other guys body hit Newnes head.
There is no way a report could be sustained because of - no alternative way to compete for the ball.
The guy did not go for a bump, he competed for the ball in a manner that protected himself.
Newnes also competed for the ball but failed to completely protect himself.
Both players stayed on their feet.
Neither player used a potential leg breaking slide into the other legs,

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
Mills will probably get weeks.....not sure he should, but probably will.
The AFL, in their wisdom, talk about the "duty of care" - if they apply that here, he has to sit out.
Newnes got to the ball first, took possession, then got cleaned up. Yes, it happened quickly, but Mills has a "duty of care" to not give a concussion to a player who gets to the ball first.

No way he will get weeks. He doesn't deserve it.St Chris wrote:Mills will probably get weeks.....not sure he should, but probably will.

If Mills gets suspended then this game is completely stuffed!

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
If Mills was executing a bump then a suspension is likely due to high contact - Newnes was concussed. Pretty simple.
Hard question is was it a bump??

Great contest but Newnes didn't quite turn enough. Both going for the ball, no case to answer

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
AFL site has a video of the incident - it says Newnes injured his shoulder, not a concussion.
If that's the case, there wont be a case to answer.

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
I thought the swans player ran past the ball to bump Newnes and, as he failed a concussion test, the the swan player should have had a case to answer.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Re: Question about the Newnes incident
Mills was cleaver he wanted to make contact and hurt, lead with his hip and got him high text book really. Just enough not to be reported this week. Sydney have been lucky last couple of weeks. Buddy was very lucky to be playing an inch higher up the arm and it's a coat hanger (game against the Kangaroos). Having said that Mills should have been targeted for the rest of the game.
