Jack Steele

Post: # 1670560Post WellardSaint »

Have been watching him closely and noticed he gets far more handballs than kicks.
He gets in and under, and is usually tackled very quickly.
One thing he does brilliantly, is spot a viable target, and handball to advantage.
His team-mates see the #9 in a big contest, and they know there's a big chance he'll get it and give off.

They can run in numbers in confidence, and therefore his numbers don't tell the whole story- the composure and awareness
lets the guys retain possession and move it forward.

I think he averages 17 disposals per game; he got 29 against the Marshmallows on Saturday.
He tackles 7.5 per game as well.
A really valuable and effective pick-up, well done to the recruiters. No wonder Norf wanted him

Yep, I agree with all of that. It is just amazing that GWS has been gifted a list with such depth that they can let him go (more or less for nothing).

Second coming of Lenny Hayes? he would've learned a lot from the great man up at GWS. Also this has to be the 50th Jack Steele thread to run through the site haha.

Has averaged 21.5 disposals in his 8 St Kilda Games.

He is a bargain for whatever our second pick will end up being this year.

We used our 2nd round 2017 pick to buy Jack Steele.

If we finish 6th that pick will initially be pick 31
But pick 31 in 2016 became pick 38 as the draft progressed.

I think we got a bargain, lets go shopping there again soon.
Josh Kelly ?

I think next year we could see him go up a level and even out that kick/handball ratio. With a better fitness base from a strong pre season he could become a true inside/outside midfielder. He would be an excellent link-up player with his height and strength advantage over most midfielders.

Think he'll always handball more than kick, purely because he wants to burrow in and get the ball;
seems to do more inside than outside, so he looks for a fellow Saint while he's being grabbed.

Someone here said he has "artists hands" not sure exactly what that means,
but he's very quick and smart with the hands.

I think he'll always have a pretty high handball rate but right now it might be the most lopsided ratio in the AFL. He's averaging 6.6 kicks per game and 14.9 handballs. I think with some more experience and a stronger pre season he could aim to build his offensive game with averages of 10 kicks and 15 handballs next year.

He will, in time, be acknowledged as the "steal" of that trade period / draft.

Very strong through a tackle and not easy to take down, his body shape and size really does not indicate how strong he is.

Quite skilled at keeping his arms free and getting the ball out.

Absolute trading bargain really. One second rounder for a young guy that can walk straight in and win the hard ball.

It's good to have two taller onballers like Steele and Acres who can get their arms free in tackles and handball to advantage- they are both going to keep getting better. Add to that the grunt work of Ross, Stevens and Dunstan plus Steven grabbing the crumbs and running. Just need those forwards to kick more goals now.

Steele and Ross are the same height 187cm

Koby and Acres are a bit taller at 189 & 190

Maybe I should have said...it's good to have onballers with long arms? :D

I think the size of Ross is underrated. He's a big boy!

At 187 and 86kg he is very strong inside

I think Jack Steele is a touch bigger.... but size is only one factor

Surprised by Ross being as big as those three. Would of definitely classed those three as 'big' midfielders, but not with Ross

Agree with this. Except Josh kicks the ball more and is a nice kick. Would love to see Steele kick a little bit more, but otherwise he's been great.
