Stars that were late bloomers

Post: # 1659653Post MC Gusto »

Just a point here on how quick we are to right off our kids...

I am keen to understand when some of the current stars of the AFL really showed their wares. Obviously you have the bont and because of him we all get suckered in to thinking if you don't star from day 1 you never will. But there are a number of AFL guns that took a while to show their stuff. People talk about the 50 game rule...is it accurate?

Danger?
Fyfe?
Martin?
Watson?
Hawkins?
Kennedy?
etc

I am sure there are more...but these guys definitely weren't stars day 1 and i am pretty sure they werent 20 games / 50 games in?

Danger, Fyfe and Hawkins have unique physical characteristics.

Martin was a gun from day 1.
Fyfe dominated in his second season.
Watson = drug cheat

That only leaves Kennedy who was poor in his first three seasons but he was at Carlton so had an excuse and had to be de-programmed.
He kicked 31 goals in 16 games in his 4th season.

Look at the team they were in....

Were there spots?

were they skinny?

Danger found it hard season 1 - since he remained in Victoria at school... so season 2 was season 1

What about Kosi? Sam Mitchell? Rioli? Selwood? Paul Haselby, Josh Fraser and countless examples of the opposite

What was various clubs plans with Kids

Geelong 02 gave half the 07 AFL team an introductory VFL premiership

Sydney had the 4 year apprenticeship

Ross Lyon didn't trust anyone under 22

I still haven't written McCartin off
But I'm concerned about a few limiting factors, that will inhibit his output

He did indeed, Con and he was a bottom ager as well. Yes, OP. The condition known as Opposition to Playing him syndrome, brought to you by Ross Lyon.

As much as I'd love Billings to become a star, how could he blossom into one when he can't kick further than 20m? Can't tackle, can't run, can't play unless he's got time and space. And he's in his third year

This is rubbish -watch the match against Bulldogs R5 2015 where he kicks a goal from the boundary outside 50!
Get your facts right.

Reasons kind of matter.
That is the point of the discussion.

It may be poor form to write a youngster off - but the opposite end to that is to just assume they are going to be stars.
How about we have an adult discussion about individual attributes and what their chances of making it are?
Just because we can name a few late bloomers has zero relevance to whether JB and McCartin are any good.

I am sure we could all name some top 10 draft picks who never made it. But it is a silly game.

Daniel Gorringe
Billy Longer
Adam Sumner
Anthony Morabito
John Butcher
Andrew Moore
Ty Vickery
Jimmy Toumpas
Jon O Rourke
Kristian Jaksche

See that was easy.
But so what? It doesn't mean our players will be duds.
Same way naming guns won't make our boys guns.
It is just a list of random names.

But now if he could kick it 40 most of us would me amazed.

What's gone wrong??

Peter Everitt - used to play in the reserves at Moorabbin (1992) and hit his straps in 1997.

Michael Tuck - played 100 games in the reserves before he became a senior player.

Spider was a star in his first year of seniors as an 18/19 year old.

As far as I know, Billings just finished his first proper preseason, had a chunk of last year wrecked by injury, and is still just about old enough to start shaving.

Maybe we show some patience, yeah?

Oh, I forgot, he hasn't been an instant superstar (just add water) - yeah, let's take him out the back oval and give him a lead injection........

They were both playing forward so I suppose 16 and 3 is similar to the 5 and 0 from Paddy?
