Congratulations to Tom Curren
Paul Amy‏ @PaulAmy375

Former Saint Tom Curren tonight named captain of Sandringham, where he won the 2012 b&f. Good fit for the Sandy-St Kilda VFL alignment.

I know it's only a practice match but losing to the blues thirds side doesn't sound good.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Any match reports from this game??

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Battle continued to be noticed- as he was in the intra club
Sandringham’s 2017 preparation got off to a sour note, going down to Northern Blues by 11 points at Linen House Centre on Saturday.

In scorching conditions at St Kilda’s Seaford base, the Zebras surrendered a quarter time lead to kick a wayward 4.13 post-first change in the club’s first pre-season hit-out.

Their woes were compounded by a knee injury to Saints rookie Nick O’Kearney mid-way through the second quarter.

While ruled out for the remainder of the morning, an early prognosis points to O’Kearney avoiding the dreaded ACL injury when his knee gave way in a tackle.

With eight new faces, Sandringham got off to a fast start – booting four of the game’s first five goals in a show of electrifying pace and ball movement.

Rowan Marshall and Josh Battle worked in tandem as Sandringham’s twin towers up forward, while Tom Curren led a young midfield brigade with Myke Cook watching from the sidelines.

Last season’s forward sensation Joe Fisscher played behind the ball, applying his pack crashing abilities to the defensive 50.

New Zebras recruit Callum Cathcart got the scoreboard rolling for 2017 with a free kick and 50 metre penalty goal, while Marshall utilised his 201cm frame to impress with two first quarter goals.

No St Kilda players will play for Sandringham on Saturday. Saints have an internal trial instead on Friday.

Interview with Lindsey and Preview by VFL
BIGGEST TEAM STRENGTHS:

“Our midfielders and forwards will be strengths of ours. I think our midfield will run really deep, especially with the influx of St Kilda players we’ll have on a weekly basis. Our forward line will be really good in my opinion, especially if we’re fit at AFL level. We have a lot of small forwards vying for spots in St Kilda’s team that will miss out and come down to Sandringham to play those roles. Also, St Kilda’s rookie-listing of (former North Ballarat key forward/ruckman) Rowan Marshall will help us inside 50. I don’t think he’ll be on the rookie list for too much longer, as he’s going about it really well at the moment.”

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT ON 2016:

“Our VFL personnel’s changed a lot. We’ve got 23 new players on our list – which is half the list – and there’s been a fair turnover at St Kilda too, so you won’t really see the adjustments stand out and the improvement straight away.

“I think our consistency around the footy will have a massive effect on how well we go this year. I’d say our contested-ball indicators is an area where we need to get better.”

COACHING PANEL CHANGES:

“We’ll have Ben McGlynn, the ex-Sydney forward, as our forwards coach this year. He’s already been so valuable for our young small forwards, coming from the role he played at Sydney. Brendon Allen’s our senior assistant and he’s still our midfield coach. Peta Searle will be the stoppage coach after coaching the forwards last year and Adrian Connolly comes in from Frankston as our back line coach. He’s a really good person, knows his footy and the boys are really enjoying having him around. I’ve gone from being the back line coach to the senior coach.”

the coaches words as season begins
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/loca ... 7650ab8149
Former Western Bulldogs star Gilbee was a masterful kick and played with a sense of adventure, so it was no surprise he said he would be encouraging “an attacking brand of footy’’ from the Zebras this year.

“There will still be a heavy focus on the defensive side — I think that stacks up in every game that you play, that if you’re strong defensively you can really translate that into your attacking side,’’ he said.

“We want to challenge our guys to take the game on, hit those targets. We don’t want to be stupid or reckless about it, but I really give a licence for our guys to go for it.

“At times it won’t come off and it’s going to look silly going back the other way, but I want our guys to butter up and have another crack at things.’

Preview - as we wait for the first' squad' given the saints haven't finalised a team

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2017-04-1 ... on-preview
The Draw

Trevor Barker Oval will host nine home games in 2017, including the first month of the season all at Beach Rd. New coach Lindsay Gilbee will be looking to start the season well by taking advantage of those home games.

The fixture presents plenty of tough tests along the road, including trips to Geelong, Ballarat, Williamstown, Coburg, Preston and a game under lights at Footscray.

Despite the two byes in rounds nine and 17, the Zebras have away clashes with Richmond and North Ballarat in the final two rounds
.
