Paddy's Underarm Patch

Post: # 1617275Post On the Bench »

Hopefully somebody on here knows, I've been wondering about the patch Paddy has had under his arm for the past few games.

Is it a glucose measuring device, similar to the one described in the following article?

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health ... b770844001

Or is it a transdermal glucose type patch? In case he becomes hypo-glycemic from too much exercise.

For what it's worth I have noticed in the last couple of games that he hasn't had the patch to begin with & in the game against Essendon he ended up with 2. He only had 1 last weekend but apparently he spent about 12 minutes off the ground so I imagine it is all related to his diabetes. Maybe they're experimenting & it's taking a bit of time to get it right.

I don't know what it is, but I like that the condition isn't holding him back.

I'd imagine diabetes is like a lot of things these days - hardly a concern so long as you are vigilant and disciplined.

I was also thinking about that on the weekend, just assumed it was where they test his levels. Maybe they don't like the idea of pricking the finger because of blood on hands. I know it doesnt bleed long but if he needs to get out there quick a patched arm is better.

Was also wondering why he always has both thumbs taped to around his wrists.

I have heard he is into injecting.

Think it is covering his track marks

My only concern is that he seems to spend extra long periods on the bench.
Hopefully they can control it and allow him to only have the normal rest periods as the other key forwards.

I think you will find that the reason he spends so long at a time on the bench is that they are experimenting with him, doing various tests etc.
I have been a type 2 diabetic for ten years, on insulin for the last three. I am not quite as young as Paddy, but he has my sympathy.

Was'nt the Cripps that went to Wet Toast also a diabetic?

Hes at the pretty severe end of the type 1 spectrum - so I have no doubt the "concussion" sustained a handful of weeks back was sugar low related
I can remember seeing him on the bench looking sugar low spacey
the blood test results in very little blood - wouldnt be too much of a hygiene concern and there is zero stick prick chance to staff
Thumb taping would assume has more to do with strain/sprain dislocation prevention

From The Fireman
how does it affect you ?

It doesnt effect me much. My age has more effect. 76 in four weeks. The biggest effect diabetes seems to have on me is I am always thirsty. And lethargic.

thanks for that. so the lethargy thing is the key here. Paddy certainly doesn't appear lethargic. but I guess it affects diff people diff ways.

I was not lethargic when I was young either. That bit probably comes with age. And the wees bit is true too.
