Jaxons, what should the club do with pick 14?

Surely we package 14 with 44 and 68 and send to GWS for #8...

Could end up as Carlisle and Freeman for 2 x 2nd rounders, a 4th rounder and a 1st round pick downgrade (#5 --> #8).

Still would leave us #45 for Rice.

That would be some draft and trade period.

What do we do with our early pre season draft pick? Mitch Brown?

We'd need space on our list and Salary Cap.

Hawks could do worse than taking Mitch Brown to replace Brian Lake

2 x pick 14 = pick 3. That is good for GWS.

This is a win-win-win for all parties.

I really hope this gets through.

This would mean Weller, Carlile, Freeman, Rice + maybe use pick 45 in the draft + SInclair.

AND

We keep out first rounder for next year in tact.

This would be terrific.

Shouldnt be hard that for a side coming off an 18th and a 14th? We should have ample room.

Yes, I think the list is a bigger issue than the cap.

Pick 14 = 1,161 points
Pick 44 = 362 points
Pick 68 = 59 points
Total = 1,582 points
PIck 8 = 1,551 points
GWS would be 31 points better off.

Pick 45 = 347 points with 197 discount points = 544 points
It would mean that if another club called Rice at or before pick 33 our Rice would be fried.

Unless GWS got a better offer for pick 8
& unless we go after Lachie Weller
& unless we feared Rice would be called before pick 34
we should see if we can get pick 8.

Should seriously just throw 14 at Weller.

I have absolutely no idea if it would have any legs at all..... But that is just a no brainer imo.

If agree that Mills (Sydney), Hopper (GWS), Kennedy (GWS) are in the top 10 then pick 8 would deliver us effectively choice 11.
Pick 14 would deliver us effectively choice 19 with Keays (Brisbane), Hipwood (Brisbane) also gone.

Means when looking a phantom drafts we get choice 11 for pick 8 or choice 19 for pick 14.
Twomey (AFL) phantom draft has Darcy Tucker at choice 11 and Jade Gresham at choice 19.

PIck 14 will become choice 19 if 5 academy players are taken ahead of it.
Lachie Weller was taken at pick 13 in 2014.

Agree entirely. This chance may not come across our bows again. Go for it.

Either go get Weller or try to trade up to pick 8 (choice 11 after 3 academy picks).

GWS would be crazy not to take the offer..

2 first rounders for McCarthy... they have 2 gun midfielders in this years draft.. they will have to burn 7 on hopper... but Kennedy will not get a bid in the top 6... so they get a free shot at pick 8 .. they can take the best KPF e.g. Weideman to add to Cameron and Patton

btw .. this is why they wont trade pick 8.... they get to actually use it... they dont care about points at all..
Dorado is just an idiot....

actually.... GWS wont get a free shot at 8 if Hopper gets a bid at 3 because even with 20% discount.. they will need 7 + more points... as far as I know that means 8 will need to slide by the amount of points they are short.... maybe down to around 10-11..

it would take a bid of pick 1-2 for Hopper to really make it worthwhile for GWS to have traded out 8.. I think they will take their chances and keep it.. a bid at 1 would actually push their pick 8 below our pick 14, making 14 into 13...

unfortunately Carlton will not call Hopper at 1...

How's the cheek of the 'Pies.....first sending Treloar off for surgery without GWS's knowledge, then parading him in a club polo and signing his new contract in a vid on their website, all before any deal is done. If I were GWS, I'd pull the deal to teach Eddie a lesson. Time for them to show a bit of respect.

Please ignore all my earlier posts concerned at not having the points to get Bailey Rice.
It seems that if we have a short fall we don't have to make up the difference from next years first round draft pick - effectively dropping down the draft order.
no club would do that for a late pick father-son.
It appears that the deficit can be made up from the same round in 2016 that the player is called in 2015.

If the Carlisle trade is confirmed today we would be sitting with picks 14, 44, 45 & 68.
We could hold back pick 68 with 59 points plus a discount of 197 points = 256 points trumps pick covers pick 52 onwards.
We should be looking to combine picks 44 and 45 to move up the draft order - they contain 709 points.
709 points is more than pick 27.
Added to pick 14 gives 1,870 points
1870 points is just shy of pick 5, it should buy pick 6 (1,751 points) if it were for sale.
Probably only GWS Brisbane and Sydney would be interested in selling first round picks to improve their points count.
At present GWS has 8, they also have pick 27 but things can change fast.

Get Weller!!

As I posted earlier I really think the sum of the two together will far outweigh them as individuals in separate teams

Would love lauchie and mav in one team, at the mighty saints!

What a trading period that would be!!

yes.. but like I said above... it is not just about points it is about position in the draft...

You want a pick **before** your F/S or academy player is going to get called... You dont trade down such a pick

So for GWS,, 8 will come *before* Kennedy is picked (partly because they own 7)
So they are far better keeping it, getting someone with 8 then getting Kennedy with their scraps...

btw Rice nominating us, and clever dealing assuming the Carlisle deal is ratified, means we have done well out of the new system ..
24 was not a good pick for us because it was likely to be required for Rice.. but with 14 we get a free shot at whoever we want and still get Roce

Luckily, our recruiting team understood the rules better than the moron they were negotiating with, who thought he could get 8

sorry.. not luck.. good management

Did you know the AFL points system is based on players salaries.
They plotted players salaries against their draft pick number to come up with points for each pick number.

http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20 ... system.pdf

The graph actually reveals that points allocated for 1st round picks after 3 are probably a bit high.
Picks from 4 to 25 are over valued compared to salary.
But also shows that the top 10 picks get the lions share of the salary cap.
