No subjects are shied away from. The heartbreak of Jarrad McVeigh losing his baby daughter, Travis Boak watching as his father was overcome by cancer and the death of Nick Riewoldt’s sister Maddie are confronted by the men we see each week leading their teams into battle.

What also emerges is the cross club bond that exists between the on-field leaders and the understanding they have of each other having to deal with their intensely personal tragedies in the glare of the public spotlight.

In this vein Joel Selwood tells of contacting Riewoldt when he faced his family tragedy earlier this year.

In the middle of filming this documentary the terrible death of Phillip Walsh rocked the football world and more specifically the Adelaide Football Club. Walsh had made Taylor Walker captain a few months earlier and the affinity between the two men was clear as Walker speaks openly of the dramatic events which left such an indelible mark.

Walker, Riewoldt, Matthew Pavlich and Bob Murphy feature heavily and some of the younger skippers such as Callan Ward and Phil Davis tell how they are somewhat in awe of sharing the stage with such well established football luminaries.

Nick Reiwoldt and Matthew Pavlich IMHO presented so well on that program? They are both such articulate, intelligent, grounded and well rounded individuals, head & shoulders above some of the other captains. I'm sure whatever their future directions are in life after football they will be very successful in their endeavours. I'm bet they will be bombarded with employment opportunities, whether it will be inside the umbrella of the AFL or media or away from football altogether.
I think Pavlich has been planning for life after footy for some years now, he already has 2 degrees, currently completing an MBA, has vast property investments and involved in media. The world will be his oyster.

I was very interested in Trent Cotchin's responses........ captaincy doesn't seem to sit so comfortably on his shoulders, a very reflective young man, I really liked his attitude toward the game and life away from it.

As for yesterday's heroes, Voss, Carey & Kernahan, oh the egos of those three, and they fed off each other in one-up-manship. Poor, self effacing Paul Kelly just wasn't allowed a look in.

I gotta agree with you there Loris to me Pav came across as such an impressive individual we know from our experiences with out team and how we immerse ourselves in saints related information how special our captain is but to look in at the others and see a side you don't get to see was fantastic - heck it had me feeling so sorry for poor Pav to not get that chance for a flag (obviously I feel more for Rooey)
I gotta agree with you comment on Cotchin he doesn't seem like he really wants or maybe feels entitled to be the captain - maybe it's an age thing and he will grow into it but he was defiantly in my eyes an odd one out out of all the guys ..

Bob Murphy I really warmed to from this show he really came across as a caring bloke who really is just loving being at his club.. A true club man
Marc Murphy to me came across as not really knowing what he is doing I think he is really unfortunate he doesn't have that strong leader to help him and develop his captaincy although he had Judd I don't think he was ever fully comfortable as a leader himself so he has maybe passed that down onto Marc
Boak is pretty impressive I can see him being a strong leader
Jobe I got the feeling he was holding back there were a few things he said that I think may have Ben a sub conscious swipe at his club and especially Hird - he really enthisised the "but not be your mate" part when talking about relationship with coaches
The GWS boys really are learning on the run I think that's why guys like shaw mummy ect. are vital out there
I would of like to of seen more from Hurn as they only just scratched the surface on him also Tex I would have like to have seen more of .
To me the ones who I found a bit urgh was Hodge - he came across in my eyes a little false and his comment about leading from example and not being able to hit the beers was a bit ironic given his issues leading into the finals .. I also felt Pendles was a bit lacklustre he didn't really open up much at all and what he did say came off a bit arrogant and wankery... Swallow I couldn't get past how white his teeth were and how orange his skin was really was a bit of a poser in a few of the shots....

As for the four captains Voss Kernahan Carey and Kelly the first three are just ego's (not so much Sticks) Carey is so in love with himself he needs to get a restraining order on himself and Voss isn't that far behind.. I think Jobe said it best (and perhaps another sub swipe at Hird) not winning a flag doesn't make less of a captain but perhaps winning one elevates one more then their actual status...
Great show !!! Loved it

Just watched it on you tube.
Great viewing.
NRoo is without doubt a great of the game. He and Pav impressed me the most.
Bob Murphy and Travis Boak seem great captains too. Passionate and genuine.
The human element was touching and for McVeigh, NRoo and Boak to open up and keep on going and leading shows real strength. I would imagine it would be quite easy to be inspired them and want to follow them.
Pendles came across as a "yes" man... Buckley's puppet and Swallow was similar... good character but lacking in charisma. M Murphy and Cotch appear captains through default- in lieu of there not being anyone else. Having said that though they came across well given those circumstances.
I would've liked to have seen more of Rocky at the coalface as he is passionate and demanding but seeing him joking with Leppa in the banter of "You're the worst captain in the AFL" and "You're the worst coach" was typical of the lighter and fun side the doco portrayed of him.
The co captains at GWS complement each other well it seems... noticed Heater slapping Davis on the arse after the latter had given the team a rev up about something... took that as confirmation of his support...looked good. Personally I'm not sure if Sydney need the co captains.
Jobe was an interesting one. Comes across really well and I think he's a great captain but you certainly sense by his words that he isn't a fan of Hird and has been hurt by the drug scandal.
Jelwood was his usual classy self... probably should've mentioned him alongside NRoo and Pav.
Hodge has been successful but has a "tosser" bit to his personality... would've fit nicely into the Sticks, Carey and Voss quartet cringefest that Paul Kelly was unfortunate to be a part of.
Worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Loved how Rooey came across. And Murphy. Thing that struck me though - in light of the '3-peat' - was Hodge saying Clarko's on the phone to him every five minutes with a new idea!
