St.Kilda Characters since 1970

Post: # 1514644Post OldGeorgeYoung »

I was bored today and started thinking about a team of past players that have been a bit different, cult heroes, villains or players who have generally entertained us over the years.

No doubt I've got this massively wrong, but I had to start somewhere....

B. Stevie Baker, Cowboy Neale, Jeff Sarau
HB. Ralf Clarke, Val Perovic, Mad dog Muir
C Aussie Jones Ian Stewart Joffa Cunningham
HF. George Young N. Reiwoldt B.B.B Barry Hall
F. G-Train Plugger Milney
Fol Carl Ditterich, Nicky Winmar, P66’s choice
Int Spider, Jacko, WoW, Allan Davis
Emergencies Tommy Walsh, Con Gorozidis, Milan Faletic, Silvo Foschini

Cowboy was the last player I saw kick out from full-back with a drop kick and scrubbed it 40m along the ground. The opposition kicked a point and he stubbornly tried it again with better success.

Who is Ralf Clarke?

I would have Rod Owen on a half forward flank, and Garry Colling on the bench.

Tony Antrobus?
I'm not sure Raph was a character? Seems like a normal bloke.

Im thinking a character is either flamboyant or slightly unhinged? Get Dale Kickett in there :-)

But overall great side from the OP :-)

Sziller and Aussie Jones had a big personality for a little man.

I was tossing up b/w Raph (highly debated player) & Jack Daniel's (kicking) on the H.B flank.

Still can't pick the rovers postion. Maybe Paul Callery, thou Dupa was a favourite in 1978. Neither were controversial.

The bench is very very slow

And Brian Wilson! Man that guy was a rock star :D Some of the great celebrations!

Some characters in this - How many times have we scored 24 goals in a match?

As discussed in another thread Rod should have been an absolute legend of the afl and should be in this team - probably no one else in afl history has gone straight from captain of the little league ( when the little league was a representative team team like an under 12 version of the the under 19's ) virtually straight onto the senior list - was kicking goals from the wing in the little league and 3-4 years later doing the same for the seniors

Love your choice of rover OGY.

To your list I'd add Jimmy 'karate' O'Dea, (embarrassingly  ) Mark Jackson, Wow Jones, Barry Lawrence and (embarrassingly  ) Glenn Middlemiss.

If that was circa 1978/79 at the Lakeside Oval, then I saw that one up close.

We were getting done. After kicking (scrubbing) the kick-in to the opposition, a clearly dirty Cowboy turned around, walked up to the goal post, and gave it an almighty kick. Set the thing swaying. Hilarious! South and Saints supporters all cracked up laffin'. (Probably get reported and fined for that sorta' thing today.)

Paul Temay - It always looked like he was running backwards somehow or other even though he was going forwards.

I reckon that scrubba drop kick was out at Waverly.

I vaguely remember, maybe mid 70s Cowboy muffing a kick out from a point, and pretty sure it was out there. Maybe he muffed it more than once. :D

I think Justin Peckett was a little different to your average footballer.
Greg Burns was my favorite growing up and he was definitely a touch out there.

A couple of characters that could be added :-
Gary Sidebottom
Joffa Cunningham

Not sure why Roo is I the OP's team?
Maybe Zach Dawson should be included for his photography skills?

Jim O'Dea possibly worth a look. He nearly killed a Collingwood player and got 10 weeks.

I loved the form of the trotting trainer/driver from Snake Valley, Greg Burns. Loved the way he went about it, skilful with the wonderful "don't argue" fend off. Two others in the 80's who caught my eye, were Chris "snappy Tom" Stone, who challenged conventional footy attire by wearing the squash goggles.

Greg Packham, the little ranga from Ballarat who wore the unfashionable headband was also a favourite. Skilful and good around the goals, he, like most in the 80's at the saints, was not persevered with.

I agree with a lot of the suggestions.

Out: N, Reiwoldt (insufficient controversy), R. Clarke (inj), T Walsh (delisted), J Sarau, Con Gorozidis, A Davis (dropped)
In: R. Hunt, J. O’Dea, B. Wilson, R. Owen, L. Vidovic, G Burns, G Sidebottom

B. Stevie Baker, Cowboy Neale, Lazar. Vidovic
HB. Jimmy O’Dea, Val Perovic, Mad dog Muir
C Aussie Jones Ian Stewart Joffa Cunningham
HF. Rod Owen Rex hunt B.B.B Barry Hall
F. G-Train Plugger Milney
Fol Carl Ditterich, Nicky Winmar, Greg burns

Int Spider, Jacko, WoW Jones, George Young
Emergencies, Milan Faletic, Silvo Foschini, Jack Daniels, Gary Sidebottom

Can we redraft the centre-line & Full forward line. Maybe with Milney as a Rookie selection (again)

Jeff Sarau gave plenty of entertainment. There is some great footage of pup and Mike Fitspatrick having a nice little punch up with an umpire (was it Kevin Smith?) in between them.

For maximum dickheadidity (I like making up new words for emphasis) Mark Jackson was entertaining in his brief Saintly stint.

I am still hurting from 71;
my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.
It hurts barracking for the Saints
