On the Couch tomorrow

Post: # 1476165Post SemperFidelis »

Post match tonight just announced that tomorrow night's OTC show will be doing an analysis on our club; effectively, why since 2010 we've plummeted to our current depths.

Marvellous. Get out your hair shirts ...

(Or don't turn on at all)

It's probably gonna have a few cold hard truths in it.

I will watch.

Like to think I can take the stuff that's valid, and mock that which isn't.

It will have a lot of Ross, Ball, BJ, Dal, Dawson etc

Watters.

Hope they look at the admin.

It would be nice if we could have a StKilda person on the interview segment -there hasn't been one this year (At least 3 Collingwood!)

they are going to speak to Football dept manager from 2009- Greg Hutchison
and Andrew Thompson

so atleast there is some St Kilda imput

but in reality I feel the Saints have been fairly transparent.

On now, Hutchinson tipping the bucket on our drafting, currently exonerating Lyon. "He played the players he had available".

Nettlefold should have stopped Lyon going, "would have been nice for [Watters] to get another year".

Goddard went for $, could have been saved, Dal pushed, McEvoy simply a deal for the draft pick.

And we took 8 weeks to get going in 2011 because our players were so damaged.

Stand by for more.

Now interviewing Andrew Thompson.

Says recruiting in past poor, good in last couple of years.

Current drop off initially greater than expected, but all on same page now.

Mike - 46 draft choices in 11 year period, 11 remain.

AT - yep, some poor choices up to 2010.

Mike - Now criticising the Lovett recruiting - poor due diligence b/c we gave up draft picks.

AT on Ross and recruiting - RL an outstanding coach; winning 22 games in a season wallpapers over cracks; now gone from 2 part time to 2 full time recruiters.

AT on Ross leaving - he made the choice. Tremendous for our footy club. But powerful teams interstate can pay substantially more. No doubt that $ came into it. He loved the players and they him. We thought we had a deal with him in the last week. Watters a mistake, but no details given.

AT on the future. 3-4 years. Panel agrees.

Panel says don't recruit from others, load up on the draft.

Mike - there is a light (rather than a train) in the tunnel.

I thought Andrew Thompson spoke well.
They mentioned 28 players on the list have arrived in the last three years and another year or two of getting the best young talent followed by free agent target and we have hope

So what happens if in 3 years time freo are in the same situation we are currently in ?
does ross shoulder any responsibility then ?

If he was still at the club we may be slighty better off , but we'd still be miles off making the GF .
And he'd be copping criticism for his defensive style , like he got in 2010-11 .

Discussion on Lovett was interesting. Sheahan claimed that the thinking was right; their assessment was that they were very close and needed to inject some outside run. But thought it was a bit rough when they claimed we hadn't done due diligence and suggested all we needed to do was to ask Essendon and they would have told us what he was like!

From listening to this i question the analysis. How about why mini played finals whilst being out of form when armo had played his best game only weeks before. Why did lyons manager not know. Would he have stayed for same amount??

Hutch tipped responsibilty of RL leaving squarely on Nettlefold.

he did say we may have asked but Essendon would not have told us to steer clear.......
that was the last bit of his comment on Lovett

Its very likely that in 3 years we will still be in this position and that was pretty much the summary. Sheahan hopes that we have a light at the end of the tunnel but it could easily be a train. Christ people are talking about trading Jack because he is the only guy with currency at the moment. What we really need is a priority pick because we are just not competitive and it will get worse next year!!

The principal thesis was to compare the trajectory of the Saints v the Cats since we won the 2004 Wizard Cup.

What was hinted at, but not really given enough credence by the panel (in my view) was the utterly devastating effect that losing 2 in a row has to have. At that point, the comparison with Geelong becomes unfair.

Yes, we recruited badly In the lead up, but as has been mentioned on this site many times before, had we won one, all of that would have been forgiven in the wash up.

When Hutchy talks about the impact of losing 2010 in terms of early games lost in 2011, it is like seeing that toe poke and f$&@ing dodgy bounce all over again.

Quite depressing.

Jiggster, think I need your glass half full pep talk right about now.

Key things I noted

Did anyone like Nettledfold?

Gwilt, Armitage & Geary were all emergencies over 09/10 grand finals, he didn't play those at his disposal

Greg thought the issues arising from Watters changing te ethos of the club were to be expected, deserved another year

Rubbish segment really. Compare our key losses due to injury since 2004 that would have played in 09/10 and beyond. Then add Geelong getting a top 5 player for free in the 2007 draft on top Selwood.

Never has so much angst been felt about a failed coach!
Same number of flags as Terry Wallace, EAde and Bobby Rose.
One less than Alan Joyce and Tony Jewel FFS!

.
In the early part of 2011 , we were losing games because ross needed to blood younger players but after his falling out with the club over his contract ( contract extension talks put on hold till the end of the season ) From that point on he played all the old player's . The young one's who got a game would get one week to preform or it was back to the VFL . Lyon was only interested in making the finals , so he had more currency on the market .
After that final loss to the swine , Brereton commented " he looks like a man who had coached his last game at the club !"
Melbourne wanted him , Freo got with with the big Bucks !

Had he kept developing our list in 2011 and we finished around 12th , other clubs may have not been so hungry to get him !
