Round 1 side

Post: # 1280535Post The Redeemer »

so peeps...in the spirit of making something like 3 threads in the past 24 hours.

What do we all think our round 1 side will look like?

You are all allowed one addition via the delisted free agents and a state league players.

Go!

Thats why its good to check a list rather than go from memory- I forgot half our players. The depth looks a little better with Gilbert, Gwilt, Geary and Stanley. I wish Stanley or Hickey could slot into FB.

Ray was pick 4 in 2003! Sam fisher at pick 55 in the 2003 draft is the only decent player above pick 1, what a crap year.

well I am very surprised that
a) 2 people think Kosi is still in our best 18, and
b) no-one thinks Ray is in our best 18 and most do not even rate him as an emergency

Montagna will be serving his one match suspension in Round 1.

This is the side that I think will be picked (taking into account Montagna's suspension, thanks Plugger14):

FB Geary, Gwilt, Simpkin
HB Dempster, Fisher, Siposs
C Steven, Hayes, Gilbert
HF Schneider, Riewoldt, Stanley
FF Milne, Koschitzke, Saad
R McEvoy, Dal Santo, Armitage
IC Ray, Newnes, Jones, Ledger
E (Montagna), Milera, Hickey, Blake, Wilkes, Dunell, Lee, Dennis-Lane

I think the coaching staff will pick Kosi until he's overtaken by Lee or Wilkes, then he'll have great trouble getting back past them. I think Hickey vs Stanley probably comes down to how good their pre-season and attitude are, but Stanley is the incumbent. I wouldn't be surprised if Blake played ahead of Gwilt or Simpkin, but I hope he's only required for backup because Simpkin puts on a bit of muscle and grows a few centimetres taller.

The sixth defender is an interesting spot. I reckon they've prepped Siposs to play there, but wouldn't be surprised if Gilbert had another run or Dunell or Newnes got a go at that position. Then there's a bunch of midfielders who could get the bench rotation spots. Joey comes back in, ahead of Steven, Ray, Jones, Ledger, Milera, Newnes. I guess maybe Ross or Markworth as well. But obviously not a huge amount of depth there.

Get a decent full back option and I actually think we're looking pretty good! Theirs a few spots up for competition which we haven't really had in a while.

I like it.

So you think they will go with the same team as last year, except without Goddard?
Why would they/you expect to finish better off than last year?

Why would they pick a mature, versatile key position player in Lee with a high pick, and not intend to play him from round 1?
How many teams pick mature age players who have dominated at the state league with the intention of testing them out in the state league to see if they find form??

He has proven himself at state level. He will be a year older and stronger... he could easily play full forward to replace Kosi who was clearly struggling at the tail of last year
.... and could even play fullback where we are short a player.. he has played a lot of football as a KPD

i'm surprised at the love for Gwilt as a key position defender.

We're in for a world of pain if this happens.

Even dearly departed Raph would do it better and Blake would be miles ahead of him as a chb.

HB Geary Fisher Gilbert

HF Milera Riewolt Schneider

R McEvoy Dal Santo Armitage
I Siposs Saad Ray
S Newnes

Barring injuries, I 'd expect something like the above. Given Montagna will be suspended, Dunell to come into the team as sub and move Newnes onto the bench or ground.

I'd be very surprised if Jones or Kosi were in Watters plans for round 1. Ray could be in the same boat.

I think there's a fair chance of that. Coaches tend to be pretty conservative people.
SuperDuper wrote:Why would they/you expect to finish better off than last year?
Obviously the team changes during the year, but personally I don't expect us to finish better than we did last year. Plenty of kids will get plenty of games, though, and a few veterans will be ushered out. By the end of the year we'll likely have missed finals but we'll be a lot closer to knowing who's in our next truly contending side.

Brisbane did it with Zorko and Gold Coast with Horsley. I haven't made a study of it, but Milera getting a debut in round one last year was a surprise to me. Don't teams want to see how the recruits train and what their form is like in the pre-season before picking them for round one?

I have no doubt he could replace Kosi to some extent, though they obviously have different styles. I very much doubt he'll play full-back - why recruit a kid who's had a breakout season in the forward line then play him back?

Something like this looks pretty good - still got to fit Hickey in though and L Cook as a key back

Can't see Hickey playing round 1, he can play the 10-12 weeks that Rhys is unjured.

L Cook  What about Mitch Thorp instead?

If we get a mature KPD, I think Geary, Gwilt & Simpkin will fight for 2 spots.
