Re: Why did Ledger not play??
I turned the TV on right on the 1st bounce so wasn't aware he wasn't playing until Ray came on. Must admit I was very disappointed - I really thought he was the perfect player to ocme on in a game like that and give us a spark. Sadly Ray gave us nothing
Re: Why did Ledger not play??
It seems that the selectors once again lacked the courage needed for change. Only 1 player who would qualify as 'youth' played, being Cripps. The same old selection process with the same average bottom few players picked. Obviously pre season form counted for absolutely nothing.Ledger was named in the best players in every pre season game, but gets overlooked for round 1.Extremely disappointing for him, and for Saints supporters looking for a bit of new blood...

Well hopefully that's the case Westcoast, b/c the positive from that is that he'll be avilable next week and he's not injured!westcoast wrote:It seems that the selectors once again lacked the courage needed for change. Re: Why did Ledger not play??
really gutless selection
ledger had good form whereas ray had a shocker of a pre-season.
ledger is also more suited to the sub role because he is an impact player .
ray is just a steady old steady old.

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
If Ledger is fit he'll be playing next week guaranteed. Watters virtually said so in his presser. He's a contested possession winner.

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
IF Ledger was fit this astounds me.
He was a friggin better bet than Cripps FFS.....PLAY HIM.
P!ss fartin round with Ray/Polo and the butcher brigade gets us nowhere.
Havent these clowns been watching Cats? Pies with blooding their youth?????..

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
A very very ordinary selection blunder, you should just play those guys with form on the board

No idea but it seems a few on here know. Doubt Ray for ledger was going to be a secret weapon to stop Port.

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
With the way Watters was talking after the match (not the words he used, but the tone) ... it was hard to tell whether Ledger was a deliberate out or whether it was for medical reasons. I think it was probably deliberate, but Watters didn't sound happy that Ledger wasn't out there today - maybe he made a call against his own better judgement not to play him?
Either way, I think you'll see Ledger come in next week with either Peake or Ray out. I think SW will keep mixing it around a bit until he finds a balance he is comfortable with between contested ball winning and attack, even if that takes a few weeks.
He was pretty brutally unhappy with the effort in winning the hard footy today. You could tell from his tone. I reckon he would have given them a fair talking to afterwards. As he said, contested possession has been an issue for the Saints for the past 12 months, it's not a recent problem, but it's the most fundamental thing holding the team back from winning more games.
Let's hope Ledger can be part of the solution.

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
i dunno but they said on abc radio that ledger and wilkes did a running session after the match out on the ground. so dont think he was injured (unless it was a hand or a finger or something).st_Trav_ofWA wrote:Don't let logic get in the way of a good moan about a loss Pluggsplugger66 wrote:Gladeveryone seems to know he was 100% fit.

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
I heard he pulled up sore after training with a quad and he wasnt 100 percent so they didn't go in with a risk. You'd reckon he'll be a mont next week. Tom for Ray, anyone for Polo. Not dissing on Polo, he toils, but it's a pointless selection.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Re: Why did Ledger not play??
Today's press reports say Ledger was not fit so that's why he didn't play. He is a definite for next week based on Watter's post match remarks. I reckon there is going to be a few blokes like Peake, Ray, Polo and Jones who will struggle to get a game this year because they refuse to do the hard stuff. They might keep Jones because of his past tagging abilities. But Watters has given notice that blokes who don't fight for the footy have no place at St Kilda. Amen to that.
Re: Why did Ledger not play??
steven and stanley are both 21. mcevoy is only 22. milera was making his debut. all of those could be considered young and inexperienced.westcoast wrote:It seems that the selectors once again lacked the courage needed for change. Only 1 player who would qualify as 'youth' played, being Cripps.
or are you just looking for more teenagers in the side?
