Austin recruited as a key position back - but playing on HBF. The Irish fella named at FB.
Keen to hear from anyone who has been watching these guys why this is so, and perhaps not the other way around.

I’d suggest Newnes May miss next week. Armo, Rice and Marshall the 3 most likely candidates. Should make tomorrow’s game a bit more interesting.

Lamb has three goals inside third quarter.

Don't know why we didn't pick him up after he did his pre-season with us.

We are three points behind.

Bad kicking like firsts

In the last few minutes,
Wright ran into the goals and kicked it out of bounds.

Little Iris guy Connellan marks in goal square and kicks into man on the mark.

Warney was having a chat 'with' Richo-- But don't think Richo had to say much.......

Good to see most of the Saints in attendance- didn't go and check under all caps- but most accounted for.

Port Melbourne were more efficient in their ball use, spread and ran better and had many more chains of good football. They are a well-oiled machine. They won the game on the outside.
We were scrappy and wasteful, in comparison. We tried to make it an inside game.
The Players who stood out for us —- Armo, Austin, Phillips, Paton, Rice. Lonie was ineffective, Longer only had a couple of possessions around the ground, Wright gets pushed around too easily - he’s very light framed, even at VFL level. The Irish boys were fairly quiet.
Of the key position defenders - Clavarino lacks agility - Austin looks more likely (moves like a tall half back flanker - and I think he played on the flank, and did quite well). Goddard was fairly quiet - but still did a couple of good things. He reads the play well.
The key forwards - Battle was quiet (the ball delivery didn’t help, perhaps), but Lamb was prominent - takes a good mark and moves well. He kicked at least 4 goals, I would have thought - a couple from 50 metres out, and one bicycle/backflip goal that Ronaldo would have applauded.

Based on the u18 videos Calvarino has a nice set of hands and kick but looks very slow.
Austin looks more likely imo.

Phillips, Paton and hopefully Langlands can all come up too.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-04-22/a ... ir-hand-up

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Sandringham v Port Melbourne - Sunday, April 22, 2pm, Trevor Barker Beach Oval

David Armitage continues to push for a recall to the senior side.

Following 31 touches in last week's VFL win at Geelong, the veteran midfielder racked up 32 and kicked a goal in Sandringham's 10-point loss to Port Melbourne.

Ed Phillips gathered 33 possessions, while Nathan Wright booted two goals."

Think Paton did alright too.

Big bad billy Longer
I find it disappointing how supporters continually criticize his performances. (note comment above about being beaten on sunday)
Not that i saw the whole game on Sunday, however he was clearly the dominant big man on the ground & was third in sandy best players according to match report
As is the case with lion hearted bill, he rucked tirerlessly all day & dominated ruck work
We all understand his skills & around the ground involvement need to be improved greatly
However being still young & a few years away from age when ruckman hit their peak performance years - I think there is massive upside for Billy's future

For the sake of our club and Billys career i hope he does improve and hit his peak but unfortunately he's a long way off right now. The commentators on Casey radio were saying likewise.

In that same match report, Port Melbourne 's best player was listed as K.Haretuku.. Port's ruckman.

I'm hoping Clavarino is worth the second round pick we gave up for him - likely low twenties.
