Team Selection

Post: # 1718925Post BackFromUSA »

each week I feel the team is selected based on best players available / form / opinion on players for specific game plan roles HOWEVER there is scant regard given IMHO to

- nullifying the opposition strengths

- creating advantage by exposing opposition weaknesses

because it simply doesn't fit into our modern game plan.

Well now is surely the time to shake things up.

This week who do we have to cover in terms of the opposition and who would i suggest?

Midfield:

Dangerfield (Stevens as a tag)
Selwood (Geary as a tag)

Defence:

Touhy (Steele)

Forward:

Kelly - high half forward / wing / mid (Newnes or Webster)
Hawkins (Brown)
Menzel (White or Roberton)

These guys all have to lock down on their opponents.

Then how else can we structure up?

They are short of talls in defence and so lets really stretch them.

Hickey to ruck and Marshall to play deep forward and be a target. Also would combat the Stanley / Smith combo that will be selected this week.

Only one of Bruce and McCartin to play otherwise we will get slaughtered by rebound footy.

So what would my team be?

White Brown Webster
Roberton Carlisle Newnes
Steven Dunstan Ross
Acres McCartin Steele (on Touhy)
Gresham Marshall Billings

Hickey
Geary (on Selwood)
Stevens (on Dangerfield)

Armitage, Coffield, Sinclair, Savage

In Longer Steele

Out Bruce Armitage

How good was Dunstan coming in and being SOTD (Sainter of the day). Great effort and should have played from R1

You should apply for a position on the match committee but you won't get the job as you make too much sense.

Bring in the meatball, injured or not. Always good for three goals against the cats. 8-)

It’s because our coach is useless.

Do you think he should be fired along with Trout?

Steven cannot break his own tags, and is not strong enough to tag Dangerfield. We can talk about who tags who, but in reality, if we are going to think about winning and climbing the ladder, our midfielders are going to have to start getting first use of the ball and not be confined to blocking and chasing. I would bring Lonie in purely as Selwood's tagger- good education for a young guy who put his hand up at Sandy and needs reward. Billings should be thrown into the action in the centre bounces- he hung around the outside too much at the contests last game, and needs to back up his potential with some bigger games...same for Gresham.

Every attempt should be made to get Hickey up and firing in the seniors- we desperately need around the ground marking ability- Marshall as forward/ruck.

I guess though if I was selecting a team, I would look at the last game and see that Dunstan, Savage, Carlise, Geary and maybe Brown played at a good competitive level but the rest just played off the pace- Long, and Coffield should definitely stay in- they will just keep getting better.

I think BackfromUSA was referring to Stevens - as in the Koby variety - not the Jack variety

Much as I will regret to see this happening to our future forward star, I believe that Paddy will be dropped this week.

Hickey and Gilbert to come into the side along with Steele.

Playing two taggers is conceding defeat before the bounce IMO.

Starting Geary & Stevens at our centre bounce would be a disaster as Selwood and Danger will still get 30+ anyway, might as well back our guys in to win the footy - Dunstan did well on Sloane last week, Steven would be hard for Selwood to keep up with. I'd go with Steele if we have to go with a tag.

Neither Stanley or Smith played last week, so I would be surprised if they both came in… Ratugolea & Blicavs were well beaten in the ruck last week, but both were very good around the ground.

Armitage should go out for Steele
Lonie in for Wright
Hickey in for Bruce

Jack Steven might not come up as his ankle needs a rest. He was on and off the ground receiving treatment last saturday

Sen Ross tagged Dangermouse a season or two ago. Seb took him to the cleaners and nabbed himself 3 Brownlow votes if my memory is correct... worth another try

The fact that our forward line is non functioning sticks out like a boner in a speedo.

It is so bloody obvious that even our coaches should have woken up to that fact.

So, there could be big changes with Battle, Lonie and even Mav in the mix.

I agree with Saynta Hickey must come in (I know AR will choke on this) and as much as I promised I would never say this in 2018 bring in Gilbert
It kills birds on so many levels
Reward for good efforts in the 2s
Adds versatility in the ruck with three talls three mobiles three marking and three goal kickers (Hickey Marshall &Gilbert)
Sorry but I'm resting Paddy

Ross on Dangerfield
And try this one on for size - Gresham to have a go on Selwood - he's the only one short enough not to get Selwood in a high tackle
I have no ideas about jack Steven he didn't set the world alight last week so injured or rest - lonie comes in

Why would we play Marshall deep forward instead of Bruce or McCartin?
Marshall played Ruck last week and was pretty impressive. Why not leave him there. He's literally done nothing to deserve being moved out of there and Hickey/Longer haven't done anything to displace him.

Bruce & Paddy haven't done much this year because most of the forward entries have been APPALLING.

Surely we are better off to show some faith in our number 1 pick who dominated juniors as a deep forward and play HIM as the deep forward instead of a hybrid Ruck/Forward off the Rookie list?

So from this team

OUT: Webster (inj) Armitage
IN: Gilbert, Lonnie

Can live with Gilbert for Webster (Rice deserves a game but we need some experienced players) but Lonie vs Armitage as a small forward - my vote for Armitage any day!

Should have been out Webster and in Rice.

Backline White Brown Rice!

I think it was Steele who replaced Armitage and Lonie replaced Wright as small forward.

a fit armo might be preferable to lonie but armo isn't fit enough to p,ay out a game, and should never have been picked in rnd 1, let alone 2 or 3. something the coach has now admitted - it was a hope and a prayer move and doesn't reflect to positively on a coach in his fifth year.
