Tall's this week

Post: # 1716795Post Jaz »

The North game was pretty bad for all, but most of our tall's have been struggling this year. I was thinking it would be good to try something different this week, not really with a view to win the game (but it might help), but more to develop players and hope some find some form again.

Not much we can do with ruck so whoever is training the best is picked, but Paddy is struggling, Brown doesn't seem tall enough for the really tall forwards and not quick enough for the mobile forwards, and Bruce has seemed a bit lost when in with Paddy and 2nd Ruck.

Carlisle would normally go to Walker but Adelaide have Jenkins who would likely monster Brown.

So what about this?

* Paddy plays on Walker. Instructions are to follow him everywhere, learn how he plays, and put in a decent contest every time the ball comes in. Given they are similar body shapes Walker's not a bad player for Paddy to emulate.
* Carlisle goes to Jenkins, should be able to keep him fairly quite.
* Brown is omitted and Gilbert comes in to big up the third tall and be the 2nd ruck.
* Bruce is the deepest forward, no ruck, no Paddy to worry about, just told to own that position for the entire match.

Plenty of players recruited to be forwards have proven to be much more capable as defenders, not sure if that's the case for Paddy but I don't see any harm in trying it out and learning how an established AFL forward plays from a defenders point of view. Only downside would be more scrutiny for Paddy, being labeled as a failure as a forward etc. but surely that could be handled.
