We also and importantly have a lack of supporters generally. Eras of regular Premiership Success breeds lots of new fans.
-- The Tigers Flags in 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1980 attracted a lot of new fans some of whom were re-awoken by this year's form.
-- All those recent Flags is why the Hawks have now gained such a huge following. I know many, many Hawks fans but I do not know any whose parents and or older family members are also Hawks fans.

The St Kilda era of limited success in the 60's and early 70's attracted new fans but not like teams who have had a run of premierships have built who attracted large numbers of extra fans.
Fair comments.

It's pretty plain and simple.

If you want noise active support, you have to target 15-40 yo men, and you have to give them licence to make noise. At current, the Cheer Squad is more kids and 55-plus, so that's going to add a different dynamic.

The only really "active" support in AFL is with Richmond in the Punt Rd End, where it's 90% blokes and 90% in this age range.

The AFL caters superbly for families, but it doesn't cater well for young-ish men any more, so that's why the atmosphere is usually pretty dull these days.

There's just no other way around it - but I feel in admitting the truth, you get called out for being exclusionary or non-PC, and thus the discussion can never be advanced beyond the status quo.

I'm very quiet at the game these days.
I used to swear a lot.
I now get told off and dirty looks from those in my area of reserved seating if i drop the f bomb .

So i have to bite my tongue.
If i can't hold it in , i usually go and stand somewhere else or head up to level three.
I really don't know why i have a reserved seat I'm never effing in it !

Quiet? I'm booked in for a throat operation after last season! Hopefully I'll have less to yell and swear at when I make my comeback in 2019.

For me, it’s fear of losing.

It’s hard to really let go. Fear of losing, regardless of the position we are in during a game, set in following that horrible game at Waverley, maybe 1999. 10 goals in front at half time. Unlosable? No, not St Kilda.

Every single game, I’m sitting there thinking, how far in front do we need to be with only 5 minutes left before I can relax and enjoy it? Generally, the answer is somewhere around 6 goals.

The last time I can remember really letting go and shouting for 100 minutes was the 2009 Grand Final, and look what happened there.

So now, it’s mostly hold it all in and prepare to be devastated.

Fair comment, given our history. However, although Im also fairly fatalistic about the Saints’, I find that the only way to counteract my negative feelings or fear of losing, is to barrack and shout for the side. Different strokes to different folks I guess.

This. The footy in general is being run/over-run by a bunch of left-leaning virtue signalers who see the game more as a vehicle for whatever happens to be their cause de jour.....

As a result all crowds are less raucous than they used to be and the effect is more noticeable if you follow the smaller clubs.

Even this place is a microcosm of it. It's been moderated to with in an inch of it's life and at the current rate that traffic has fallen off they'll end up having to hand out warnings to the tumbleweeds because there won't be anyone else left to give them to......

Have to admit that 50% of the comments yelled from the old Animal Pit would now have someone phoning the the anti-social behaviour number.

It’s gone soft for sure.

Needs a feral Adults only area with booze allowed but that leads to fights due to too many
normally “yeah na she’ll be right” blokes who are quite as a mouse when sober but violent when drunk.

I remember, even as a kid, I found that act quite enthralling - you could just yell and scream and be yourself among like-minded Sainters.

Bang the metal fence if something went wrong. Chuck the yellow pages about if it went right.

Today’s fan - 98% of them - are just passive observers of the entertainment product.

Hardsaint and myself did have fun standing at the MCG...it's pretty much as adults only as it gets...no punching required (so far). Although the short angry Richmond supporter who complained I was too tall to stand in front of her took me by surprise. I told her, being a Richmond supporter, she probably hasn't been to the footy much since 1982, but this is how public areas work these days...so move. Then we completely capitulated to the previously bruise-free Tigers, she definitely gave it to me on the way out the door. This is what happens when I gob off.

Anyway, sadly Etihad is more a reserved, golf-clapping kind of scenario.
