Best saints team in last 60 years and played min 50 games

Post: # 1710102Post Ian »

B. Peckett. Frawley. Hughton
Hb Barker. Synman Goddard( BJ)
C Winmar. Stewart. Hayes
Hf Baldock. Riewoldt. G Young
F Milne. Lockett. Loewe
R Everett. Harvey. Smith
I Dietrich. Del Santo. Muir. J Stevens

I am sure will cause some controversy and lots of discussion.
Assume the players were at their best playing footy in 2018.

Ditterich and Jack Steven I presume you mean.

Everett wouldn't hold a candle to big Carl and Frankie is ovderrated.

Otherwise good effort.

Austinnnn Jones for Frankie. Fisher for Synman. Big Carl as first ruck. Can't argue with the rest.

yep, would have carl over everitt and dempster well over peckett. chips over synman, and quite a few over muir - burke, ball, thompson. may even through baker in the interchange to tag some poor bastard - then i'd have bakes, milne, and hudghton in my team - the three amigos back together! loved em!

If you are going back 60 years. Neil Roberts would be CHB over Ian Synman.
IMO Either Bob Murray or Verdun Howell, would be streets ahead ofDanny Frawley for FB.

I agree with Loris re the key backs.

B . Burke Howell Neale
HB Barker N Roberts B Goddard
C . A Jones Stewart Dal Santo
HF Winmar Riewoldt Baldock
F. Loewe Lockett Milne
Foll. Ditterich Harvey R Smith
Inter .McIntosh Griffiths Hayes Montagna

I would love to fit George Young in there, but went with an extra midfielder.

John McIntosh just makes the 50 game cutoff , but was a super player.

I had no idea Cowboy Neale played back pocket but that is one heck of a side.

For a brief moment I thought you meant Scratcher :)

I am 64.
I did not remember n Roberts.
I thought Sam Fischer was unlucky.
I thought Macintosh played less than 50.
We all loved Dittrerich..but as a knock Ruckman into today's footy...I think Everett just in front.also better kick.
I still think frawley was our best fb.....howell and Murray v buddy??
I am v happy with Burke in bp over peckett.
BJ gets picked before colling.....every time...today's footy!!!
Hayes in 18 before del - every time
Happy with Macintosh and griffiths.

Pity about Gehrig ..but did not get there..not barry Breen.
Trott before BJ...?..no way.

Fun to reminisce.....

But Carlisle will be in...after 50 games..at chb

Enjoy the posts

And I would pick CAT before BJ

265 games and captain in 78 when we had talented team under Patterson and should have made Finals.

188cm tough and quick.

BJ only had 2 great seasons for us and jumped ship for cash.

Con- Cowboy played back pocket from the early 70s onwards. He was in the back pocket in the 71 GF- which is how he managed to catch up with Hudson. He was named in the back pocket in our team of the 20th century, alongside Verdun Howell.

Cat was a fine player , great servant of the club. Was prepared to go down to the reserves and captained or coached ( or both ? ) them to a GF in 82. I can't see BJ doing that However in my opinion BJ had better overall skills and for me is a better option in this team. The spectre of Keddie in the last quarter of 71 GF plays a part here too.

Anyway , all a matter of opinion and friendly debate.

Hard to argue with that, Loris. Murray was a champion full back (The first number on the back of my saints jumper as a kid. Howell was a freak. A genuine "swingman" before the term became popular. I loved the Spud, but those two have him well and truly covered. Hudghton, Frawley out. Murray and Howell in.

And to think of some of the champion full-forwards they stood during their careers. They didn’t have it easy. Usually they not only gave away inches (centimetres) and stones (kilograms)...... a few that spring to mind are:-

Peter Hudson
Doug Wade
Ted Whitten
Peter McKenna
Murray Weideman

I think the great Peter Hudson would be least ‘monster’ of that lot........and we know how great he was!

I’m sure with today’s training methods, the skilfull & versatile Howell and Murray would do well against Buddy Franklin & his ilk.

And I think all of the above are AFL Hall of Fame members - some Legends. Not a bad bunch of forwards to come across week in week out.
