Good job Trout and Co. Have to give it to them on some fine selections. A grade performance IMO, the best of the Richo era and better than the year we jagged Billings, Dunstan and Acres.

I was more relating to draft day alone. I would be very suprised if Clark and Coffield and even Calavino don't make the grade.

I'm a big believer in taking bets available talent at your pick and it certainly appears we have done so this draft.

Very excited at what the talent of Clark & Coffield bring and love the Claravino pick as he could develop to be the best of the bunch with those hands and his ability to take the intercept mark (JC mark II).

I also like that all of the mid sized players have pace and good footskills on their CV.

I will however make one point, all media experts and draft experts and player profiles refer to our picks as defenders who will move to midfield in time or defender recently turned mid in Clark. The only person referring to them as mids and not mid/defenders or defenders is Trout.
Now maybe Trout knows something no-one else knows, but it is this a little bit of spin from Trout? I'm guessing yes!

I'm more than happy that these guys were the best talent available, good kicks and good speed and will transform to mids over the next 3-4 years.

Because they are all elite, all these guys played midfield as juniors. At TAC level there aren't enough positions to play midfield so they play as attacking defenders.

Yep, we have picked some very good prospects.
Problem is so did 17 other rival teams.
You need to outperform those other 17 rivals regularly if you want to win a premiership.
Otherwise you are simply treading water.

Nothing wrong with attacking defenders with skill sets - think Collingwood and the unstoppable run and rebound of Shaw, Thomas and Harry O' Brien in 2010 and 2011. Something to aim for, anyway - if they remain defenders.
The good thing is they all appear to have (from all reports) good defensive traits (intercept marking, etc) as well, in their repertoire.

I'd have selected Nathan Murphy and hoped Clavarino stuck around until our next pick.

Quite happy with Clavarino - he looks a really good prospect - but I suspect he would have been available at 46 given the impressive amount of talent available between those two picks.

If Clavarino had gone, I'd have taken dual All-Australian Sam Hayes over Ben Paton (I don't think Lewis Pearce will ever make it) because it seems to take 4-5 years to develop ruckmen these days and by the time he's ready, he'll be able to replace Longer/Hickey.

Hayes looked unbelievable value to me as a long-term prospect.

Still, Clavarino is a solid pick and Paton offers some run and dash. Just not sure we needed another of his type.
