AN AUSTRALIAN Federal Police officer who died of a gunshot wound yesterday has been identified as former St Kilda footballer Malcolm Scott....

A very fine cut of a man and very good footballer. I think he pretty well gave the Saints away to concentrate on his work. Tragic.

So sad. Best wishes to his family and friends.
Poor Malcolm's suffering is now over, theirs is just beginning.
A talented man who made the world a better place.

It hurts barracking for the Saints

I'm afraid I couldn't recall him. It seems he played 10 games in 1979/80. He was at FF and once kicked 6 goals against South - the only game in which he played in a winning team with the Saints.

A Ballarat boy. One of many back in the day. A good full forward. Strong mark. Big kick on him. Another Coodabeen if only we'd been a better club back then.

We coulda/shoulda pushed for the flag in '78 and lost too many top players at year's end (think Ditterich, Rex Hunt, etc.). In '79 we started our slide to oblivion.

Malcolm Scott would have made the grade, I have no doubt, and would have filled the spot vacated by Hunt. However, career came before football. Another Saint lost in tragic circumstances.

Awful that so many cops take their own lives after what they do to keep us safe.

It’s so wrong.

It's a very tough trade. Very little support. They die 3.4 years after retirement after 60. No wonder the actuaries want then to take the pension rather than the lump sum.

Very very sad news. RIP Malcolm.

I always thought he wasn't given enough games. To average 2.6 goals a game in your first 10 games in those very mediocre teams was an achievement.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."
