2018 Free Agents

Post: # 1704939Post saintsRrising »

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-10-20/g ... g-for-2018

From the list above Lynch, Sloane.......then Gaff....then......

With 18 clubs in the market the odds of landing a genuine star would appear slim. Might have to hope that Sloane's boyhood dream really is to play with the Saints at some stage.

The good news is with only Gilbert as a FA we cannot lose anyone to FA.

The club should start plotting a major Sloane deal. Start the ball rolling now. The guy has done his part for Adelaide and has been loyal. Time to come back to big Melbs.

You're right
Whoever they want , it may not be Sloane , it may not be a free agent but they have to target that player now .
Like Melbourne did with Lever .
Half way through the season the talk was he wanted to go to the dees , obviously he made his mind up early .
We need the player we want to have the same mindset . The earlier we can convince them the better .

We should go after Sloane, have a strong feeling we’ll really be into gaff to address outside run.

I thought there was more on offer than that.

Sloane is the one. (I'd also look at Dollhouse - even if only because the Poodles pinched our Ameet. )

The rest either play positions we have covered, are too old, too expensive, too soft (Gaff), or simply too crap.

If we get him we’ll want to win the flag with him by the time he’s 31-32.

I agree.
We should go hard for both Gaff and Sloane with the goal to get at least one of them.
Has to be next year if we want them.
I don't want them after 2019. They will be too old then.

Sloane turns 28 next year. So he'll be a 29 year old veteran if we were to get him. Whilst I don't think it would be a bad thing, we'd want there to be a premiership window presenting itself.

Also, Sloane grew up a Saints supporter, which you could make of what you will.

We could also go for a combo of two FAs, e.g. Gaff and Gawn. I know people will object to that suggestion, but it's just a hypothetical.

Always thought maybe them getting Gibbs part of the reason could have been in case Sloane is gone at seasons end.

Why would we want Sloane, this year proved he can't handle a tag, waste of money, waste of a draft pick.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Maybe we’ll settle for Swallow? He’d probably do better.

Only you know why you referenced that spud in a discussion about "don't tag me" Sloane.

Swallow's nickname is Spitter, is that a reference to his dummy ?

I would take Sloane in a heartbeat. He could still play another 5-6 years. Free agents are "Free" remember... hence the name.

Except for their wage- which would be a princely sum.

With our trading this year, taking a 29 year old Sloane would be a dumb move unless we see incredibly dramatic improvement from the rest of our "youngsters".

We've pushed out our competing period to 2020-2021-2022 im guessing.

Sloane lifting the cup at 33-34 years of age seems very unlikely.

Ahmmm....of course you have to pay a half decent wage. Big deal.

So what if he did?

Maybe he won't?

Still want him at the Saints. He is an A grade mid.

Hopefully we can learn a bit from this year and really target a free agent. It feels like we missed the boat a bit this year with targeting Fyfe who was never leaving. If we culd get a deal for Sloane or Gaff early then it can make us a better side at the end of the year. It's a tricky business as every team wants the good players. Just need to offer a lot of cash.

Why restrict ourselves to free agents ?
Source players we need (elite mids), who originate from Victoria and they can request a trade "home"
for whatever reason they like !
Contracts mean nothing as has been demonstrated recently

You don't need a draft pick for a fee agent.
