Danny opens up-:"no man should ever walk alone" AUDIO

Post: # 1703739Post saintbrat »

amazingly honest and open interview as he opens up about his
depression http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/danny- ... c612b68ff4
DF >>>>>>>>>>>
I resigned about a week and a half after seeing the psychiatrist, and I still didn’t sleep a wink. I thought it would be a load off my mind, but it just wasn’t the case. Then he said: “Look, after the nervous breakdown, you’ve developed clinical depression.”

HM: What did you do to try and deal with it?

DF: I started reading books on depression, but it just wasn’t me, it wasn’t helping me. At the time I was working with Triple M and Fox Footy, and I told them I was feeling like I needed a break, so I intended to just take two weeks off. People started speculating and talking about me, and I really battled with that too. That’s why I get pretty upset with people when they start talking publicly about others when people are struggling. You’ve got to be very careful, because everyone’s different. I thought two weeks would be good for me. I’d stay off Triple M and TV, and I would get some sleep. But it didn’t help. It took me 18 months to actually come to the realisation that what was happening was a legacy of childhood and how I’d been put together.
with support from his club
DF: It’s just a part of life that happened, I guess. St Kilda knew I was battling, and they brought me back into their womb, so to speak. That helped, because it gave me a bit of discipline, and I was back to something that I loved doing. Coaching. I owe Richo and Matty Finnis a lot for giving me another opportunity, and to Fox and Triple M and SEN, all for different reasons.
HM: You said your old man was very tough. My old man was tough too, but my brothers and I have taken the initiative and every time we see him instead of giving him a handshake, we give him a kiss. I’ve got a little boy, and I kiss him every day.

DF: And so you bloody should. We are changing and we’re getting better, but we can get a hell of a lot better, there’s no doubting that. As I said, I’m blessed looking back now with the life I’ve had. Hopefully I’ve got a lot more to go. I’m excited about the next phase of our life, because our girls will be off our hands soon, and Anita and I will have a great life. Getting old doesn’t worry me; nothing worries me, actually, other than the health of my four girls and my mother. The rest is just a part of life.

HM: They love you, I love you — thanks for talking.

DF: Good on you, Hame. Give us a hug.

It is an extensive interview - I would suggest well worth purchasing the paper
"THE Danny Frawley we see on our TV screens and hear on the radio is a fun-loving former St Kilda captain who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Always up for a laugh, and happy to use himself as the punchline.

But when Danny was laughing on air, he was often grimacing off it.

We spoke about childhood, life on the land, loneliness, failing, dealing with depression and looking ahead.

Danny Frawley speaks with Hamish McLachlan. Picture: Mark Stewart
Hamish McLachlan: Spud, you took a long time off work at the start of 2014. No TV, no radio — why was that?

Danny Frawley: I had a nervous breakdown, Hame. It was incredible and so hard to believe it was actually happening, but it was, and it did. I did a game for Triple M and I was losing a lot of sleep, and then I completely fell apart.

HM: Do you know why?

DF: There were a lot of issues, and unbeknown to me at that stage, a lot of deep seated ones. The tipping point for me came when I was CEO of the AFL Coaches Association, as well as playing this other character in the media.

HM: The happy-go-lucky guy?

DF: Yeah, that’s him. My role on air at Triple M and Fox was to throw people under the bus, and throw myself under the bus whenever required. But while I was doing that in the media, the Essendon supplement scenario was playing out. No one was prepared for it, no one could have been. I wasn’t ready for it. I was put in charge of the coaches’ association as more of a marketing-type person, and was trying to deal with a crisis that I wasn’t equipped to deal with."

So people like caro wilson were part of the problem maybe?

i am not having a go at U jb

but that Question ... is the problem.

the 'shame and blame' game is continued via THAT question

the 'problem' is the programming of humanity

the 'problem' is a belief in separation

df/cw are individual expressions of WHAT ALREADY IS

observing matters at hand (what already IS)
without shame and blame attatched
either energetically or intellectually

is the conduit for the answer.

Plugger may have been the legend that brought people through the gates during the 80's and was our star attraction, but from 1987 it was Spud as captain who helped cement our club as the real deal and provided some stability on field.

He was the general and great captain and leader.

For that, as a club, and as fans we owe him a lot of help and support.

Well done Finnis and Richo!

Well done 'Spud', really admire his honesty.

I think it's fantastic when high profile sports people open up about their struggles with mental health because it just reminds you that it is an illness and it doesn't discriminate. If it can happen to Spud, it can happen to anyone. We really need to remove that stigma around mental health because it affects more people than you might think...

Good on you, Spud. It takes a lot of courage to talk so openly about something so stigmatising, even in these more enlightened times. Spud always struck me as being a little like Robin Williams. Always joking, taking the piss out of himself, always upbeat and making others feel better. This is a very common coping strategy for depressed people. You could occasionally see the emotion bubble over, which gave a clue as to his true feelings. A ripping bloke, by all accounts. I don't know him personally, but do know his brother as our kids played cricket together. A good family and he has lots of professional and social support, so I'm sure he'll be fine. You only have to see what happened to champion jockey, Greg Hall, to know it can happen to anyone. Greg was a rider of 49 Group One winners, was Lloyd Williams number one jockey, who flew around the world in private jets and was entertained by royalty and the elite. He ended up sleeping on a bench outside Vic Market, a bottle of bourbon for company. Homeless, and his wife, kids and friends all gone from his life. HE's on the way back now, thanks to his friends. Always important to ask the question, "Are you OK?"

"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Found elsewhere, but relevant to here

Once again, the Footy Community has swallowed the AFL's and the Commercial Media's bulldust, and missed the REAL message being sent out by this article.

Danny Frawley got sick and stressed BECAUSE of the Essendon Drugs Saga, this was the time Danny was working at the AFL Coaches Association, which is where James Brawshaw's brother Mark, now works. Read here for Dannys's comments:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/danny- ... c612b68ff4

I was put in charge of the coaches’ association as more of a marketing-type person, and was trying to deal with a crisis that I wasn’t equipped to deal with.

HM: You really struggled to manage the coaches that were involved in the Essendon saga?

DF: Absolutely I did. The thing came out of nowhere and it put everyone on notice, no one more than me. I was dealing behind the scenes with a lot of the Essendon coaches, who were really struggling, and anxious as to how it would all play out. I got a lot of information that was confidential, and yet on the weekend I had to take one hat off, and put another one on for the media. I was really battling with it all. I started losing some sleep, and the more tired I became, the more I had to work.
I started running a lot, trying to keep fit and hoping I would sleep, but I couldn’t, so I started drinking a lot, and then I started doing weight sessions, and in the space of three weeks without sleep, something had to give. I was waiting to get the cold, or the flu, or to become run down, but I just kept going. As my father used to say, “Work through it. You’ll be right, son”. So I tried to, and it all came to a head as a nervous breakdown.

Please learn to treat the AFL as a PR machine, and not a footy body (who run a 'competition'), and their motives become clear. Their KPIs are as follows:

1. Money from TV income
2. Their own PR/Image
3. Satisfying Gambling Interests
.
.
.
7. Running a Australian Rules Football Professional competition
.
.
.
.
.
25. Looking after junior player development and the care of the game.

Note to the cohort, conveying news of Spud's interview:

"Spud Frawley has opened up about some mental health issues he had a while back. A radio interview with the AwFuL CEO’s brudder, complemented by a podcast and Hun publishing.

All that’s good, and good on Spud.

I haven’t heard it, and have only read snippets on the site that hosted over 1200 pages of “Essendope”. A number of those snippets have concentrated on what seems to have been a something of a catalyst for Spud plumbing the depths:

Danny Frawley: I had a nervous breakdown, Hame. It was incredible and so hard to believe it was actually happening, but it was, and it did. I did a game for Triple M and I was losing a lot of sleep, and then I completely fell apart.

HM: Do you know why?

DF: There were a lot of issues, and unbeknown to me at that stage, a lot of deep seated ones. The tipping point for me came when I was CEO of the AFL Coaches Association, as well as playing this other character in the media.

Further…

HM: You really struggled to manage the coaches that were involved in the Essendon saga?

DF: Absolutely I did. The thing came out of nowhere and it put everyone on notice, no one more than me. Anyone like to bet me that was as ‘hard hitting’ as the AwFuL CEO’s brudder got?

And, would anyone like to bet me people like Spud are appointed to such roles PRECISELY because they aren’t equipped to deal with anything other than maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarketing? Where Spud says “No one was prepared for it, no one could have been”, he hasn’t twigged to that being a ‘design feature’.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how this (managerialism) s*** works.

Appoint the ill equipped far and wide, so control is narrow.

Then, in times of ‘crisis’, make sure you elicit fear of widely shared responsibility, so people stop thinking, clam up and spend all their time just wanting it to end.

It’s really quite simple.

P.S. I note Spud fluffed his lines – “supplement scenario”. “Saga” Spud, “saga”. “Scenario” loses the element of time and, therefore, misses how the whole ‘industry’ was tortured by unfair (not due) process. Still, at least he used “supplements”. Imagine the ‘reprogramming’ required if he’d used “drugs” or “PED’s”."

AFL Coaches Association chief Danny Frawley said he had no knowledge of the allegations nor the admissions made by the staffers to the AFL and ASADA investigators. "I'm not privy to that and nor should I be," said Frawley. "When this is all over, I expect I'll know more."

Frawley said Pollard had temporarily stepped off the board of the coaches' association because he was representing most Bombers coaches, conditioning and other football staff, although not Hird or his senior assistant Mark Thompson.

Danny quit the AFL Coaches Association in May 2014. Interesting press release on a "review" of the AFLCA, at a time when Essendon case was still hot.

Frawley quits coaches association
Ashley Browne May 14, 2014 11:24 AM

THE WINDS of change are sweeping through the AFL Coaches Association following the resignation of chief executive Danny Frawley on Wednesday.

The former St Kilda captain and Richmond coach stepped down from his position amid a review of the association's operations and where it fits in the AFL landscape.

"I am proud of the many achievements of the AFL Coaches Association under my leadership and in particular the establishment of the many programs designed to assist with the professional development of coaches," Frawley said in a statement.

"Whilst a review of the role of the Association is underway, it is likely that the demands of the CEO role will broaden and that expectations of the role will grow, and I don’t feel that I will be in a position to dedicate more time to the role given my other commitments, and in particular my media responsibilities."

Thanks Bratty for posting the audio link.

It was a very interesting and informative interview. Especially the first two thirds.

I have people in my family who suffer from the same mental problems. It is horrible.

I am so happy that Spud got through his situation. I hope others can too.
