What should we learn from the Tigers

Post: # 1698167Post One Eyed Saint »

- Be patient
- Stick with your coach - hold your nerve
- if your game plan doesn't work, reflect, learn and adapt
- Recruit well - 3 key areas - speed, strength and skill
- Get your Admin rock solid - a tick here

If we can draft well in the next 1-2 years we are not far away from where Richmond are now.

Go Saints!!

Get a few decent assistant coaches.

Are Danny Sexton and Aaron Hamill up to it?

That's what we said about the Bulldogs last year. Not far behind them (on the ladder this year)

As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Let's not look to Richmond for success, they've just won their first final in 16 years against an insipid opponent.

When they win a flag we can talk, even then take a look at the dogs... their list is a mess now.

Doggies self destructed.

A number like Libba partied way to hard and too long and then according to the goss there are a number of fall-outs between players

Their list is kind of the opposite of ours. Their draft picks have been good, but their trades and pick ups from other clubs not so good. Whereas our pick ups have been good value with our picks not as good.

I'd take the Bulldogs position any day. A flag, a flag, my kingdom for a flag!

So why are we learning from Richmond?

They're a completely different team. Let's take a leaf out of all the successful clubs' books and make it our own success.

1 have a good draw
2 have best players injury free
3 play with confidence
4 confidence will see lesser lights shine
Then anything can happen.
If things are slightly amiss next year they could be back down the ladder.

Find a jolly, avuncular, but fundamentally honest figure like Neil Balme.

What we should learn is that the days of good honest tall forwards are over. The game is now a running game. If your tall forwards are stars or close to it then that's fine but if they are honest battlers like ours at the moment then you are better with the best of the talls and putting smaller players around them. Same goes with the backline.

We need star mids like the tigers have and what wb had in the finals last year. We don't need kp players. Unless something changes in the game then it will continue to be a running game with less and less talls unless as I said earlier they are stars or close to it. Adelaide are an example of that. Time to wake up saints and just get mids hff and hbf

Yep this is what did it for Richmond. Caracella is so respected for his football brain, and leppich is a senior coach. This is the reason for their turn around. Hardwick is a fraud for standing there taking the glory. Have no doubt, caracella is behind all this, he may even get the suns job

Learn more resilience as supporters as we watch another Melbourne based team break a long premiership drought while we are left to ponder what could have been.

Tackle hard and work and run ya asses off. Basically Dimma took dogs blueprint from last year. Tigers small forwards tackles stick. Guys like Lonie try hard but iv never seen one of his tackles stick.

If we won a flag, I would fully expect us to be a basket case the year after

I'd take one too but I don't think looking to a once in a 100 year perfect storm is a practical approach to winning a flag.

The one thing we can learn from both Richmond and the dogs is that this is a great time to be in contention as very average sides are winning flags and finishing top 4, so if we add a couple of good players we could be in the mix very soon.

Can't say that the Cats put up much of a fight last night, they are a canny mob and I don't expect them to be that bad next final, so let's wait and see with the Tiges.

Don't know about sticking with coaches- if a head coach is so reliant on assistants to get anywhere, then he he should get the flick.

The Saints should have performed better this season, and too many on and off the field under-achieved.

We probably have nearly the least a grade players in the afl. Think you are overrating the list by a fair margin

A few things we need to recognise and identify here.

Martin and Rance are genuine bona fide stars of the comp. They are very very good players.
That is a real help.

Hardwick won 15 games in Year 3. So he showed some serious potential. 15 wins is a really good year from where they came from.

Assistants - Multiple premiership players - Leppitsch (ex senior coach, 3 flags as player), Caracella (2 flags) and McRae (3 flags).

I also had a look at their footy department and there seems to be a real focus on VFL development. They even have a specialist grappling and tackling coach.

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/club/about/staff-members

They are well resourced. Their VFL side is also top 4.

Sure, we don't have much class, but too many still didn't play to their full potential and that falls squarely on the coach IMO

Though with so many coaches including the head coach, if you only have an excellent head coach you are going to struggle. Remember too that that full time assistants put in huge hours.

At the Tigers too, they did not just bring in new assistants, but they also brought in Balme and Balme in himself would have eased the load considerably on Hardwick.

When the Cats brought in Balme, that is when Bomber and the Cats took off.

When the Doggies poached Bevo from us we never really brought in anyone else for the football role that Bevo was going to do.

Tiges just won today in the VFL as well.

So a top 4 finish guaranteed in both AFL and VFL.

I think you would call that a good year.
