the right strategy

hmmm

the two (good) kids argument
plus

new kids into our current player mix

(itself still to find its feet without the old leadership about
would execute that task easier without a
couple of 'outsiders' into the mix)

sort of a transfer of ownership year

has a touch of the right move about it u'd feel

give our existing crew a season to grab it by the balls
then add the pirates

Any possibility of Hickey being traded to GWS if Mumford retires as part of a deal for Tomlinson?
I've been pretty much waiting for this announcement...surely this has got to be the way to go? Both clubs will have thought of it, they're just waiting to see who will blink first?

We might have 200cm players on our list being Marshall, Hickey, Holmes, Longer and Pierce but to then expand that to saying we have 5 ruckmen and then expanding that to us having 5 AFL class ruckmen is just a nonsense

Do you guys actually want to support a side that will be there when the whips are cracking in the cauldren which is an AFL Grand Final?

If so , Hickey fit and in the form that had him inside our top 10 in 2016 is the only one of those listed you would want to see on the field on the last Saturday in September

The rest just do not cut it and on what we have seen will not

That is the reason 3 of those have played less than 10 games beteeen them over the last 3 seasons

And the reason a severely underdone Hickey was rested after an absence ahead of Longer being in doubt with concussion

Given the problems Hickey was battling why weren't Holmes, Marshall or Pierce selected?

I will repeat that Hickey leaving will be a disaster for St Kilda and even moreso than Mc Evoy who ahead of being released had been surpassed by the more athletic Hickey

Then Hickey ran to his problems which saw him sent to the USA ahead of the 2016 season - and look at what we got

So we badly need him fit

And I will repeat that when we pushed Sydney pre season Armitage and Hickey were our best

Without them, a rookie ruckman was being played through including having fun sitting on Longer's shoulders taking marks and running around the ground to be high in Sydney's best in a crushing win at Docklands

Any chance of combining two or more of picks 45, 59 and 63 to move up the order.
One pick in the early 30s is more likely to produce an elite player than 3 down the back of the draft pack.

How did Melbourne get to sell both their first rounder and their later rounder all from the 2018 draft ?

If that's the case, then I don't think our offer to GWS is realistic.

I will put this as simply as I can for you.

We do not need 5 ruckman. No AFL team needs 5 ruckamn on its list.

Holmes can be delisted.

PS: If we improve to be good enough to make a GF and need a ruckman then getting a ruckman is out of all the positions in the team is the easiest position to get.
Which is why most teams who have won flags in recent times have won them with imported ruckman. Nankervis, Boyd, Hale, McEvoy Jolly (at two teams), Ottens etc etc

seems right to me... way way down the list in their best and fairest... 2nd rounder is what we should offer

I really can't see how we would get a better outcome by trading than taking 7 and 8 to the draft right now. We can be guaranteed access to two of Stephenson, Cerra, Higgins, Coffield and Brayshaw who are all quality young players who would improve our team in the next couple of years.

Get one of Collins, Talia or Austin for free and focus on bringing in elite talent with our early picks. I'm disappointed that we didn't go after FA's like Trengove and Motlop or land Kelly but there's no point in paying overs for a GOP like Tomlinson.

+1. Totally agree.

You'd think Tomlinson was Alex Rance with some of the carry on here.

Bains didn't do anything last year.
Hawks were desperate for JOM and needed out pick 10 to get him.
Bains just had to sit there.
If the Hawks finished top 4 then it wouldn't have been a good deal.
This year we have also done stuff all.

I just hope we are investing heavily in intelligence on the draft.
We need to get the draft right.
Forget Bains. He has made some idiotic contract decisions. Totally over rated on here.

We need our recruiters to do their job.

Harsh on Bains.
He surely signs up the players he's been told to sign up.
We haven't lost a single good player to poaching from other teams.
He landed the trade that got us pick 7 by playing his cards well.
Apart from a pick upgrade this year I don't think we would do better than holding our picks, and possibly try to get Tomlinson cheaply.
What would you prefer him to do?

Nee!

You need quality control - would Tomlinson improve our run and carry?
Would he add something special?

Our recruiters need to take what I call an "additive" approach.
Haynes would be "additive".. Tomlinson, "subtractive" (we would lose the run and carry we would otherwise get from someone like Haynes).
You don't get ahead by standing still - so Tomlinson should not be considered (to my way of thinking)?

By the same token (at the risk of stating the obvious), having 5 ruckmen, or 10 half back flankers is not additive - having 1 quality ruckman and 2 quality half back flankers is.

Depends how the club uses him...does he have to play in the same position GWS play him? E.g. Bruce in defence. If he does, can he release someone else to fulfil a run and carry role...I'd say we have a few of them that can. We're going pretty hard for him, so the club obviously have a strong vision...even though some would prefer we sat and waited for Hawthorn

That last part is no hindrance. Now, the punching Scarlett in the face bit has potential. You're picked, my old mucker! Welcome aboard.

To quote the late, great, Farouk Bulsara, "Nothing really matters, anyone can see. Nothing really matters. Nothing really matters.....to me." Just about sums up the trade period for me.

As players being in contract doesn't seem to matter any more to the trading merry-go-round, why aren't we still going after Kelly? 7 & 8 should do it.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Was a good deal. Which I've said a million times.
But it didn't require any genius from Bains.
He just sat there. Right place and right time. Hawks were desperate.
