It might be, the club knows, the supporters guess, badly.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I actually feel sick about this.

This is exactly what everyone has been fearing.

St.Kilda promised a "big fish" so now we're going to pay overs for a bloke in a position that we don't need.

I like him as a player, I enjoy watching him. Reads the play well, as brave as they come. But just NOT what we need.
If we were light on for HBF's I'd use pick 8 on him for sure. But we aren't. We need pace & class desperately. You can't get that UNLESS you use high picks. You can get good third talks/hbf's with low picks.

This just screams St.Kilda.

very similar to Lever across the board, four years older but almost as good a pickup.

How can any club "promise" a big fish? i haven't read anywhere where the club promised a big fish. If it happens, Haynes would be a great pickup.

In the hypothetical that we use 7 or 8

Pure speculation at this point.
If we used 8 wed want 23 back. Who knows. Maybe there is another player involved.

Doesn't matter to me. We have two picks in the top 10. If we aren't getting some outside pace & class, we should be taking them to the draft.

Haynes Carlisle and Roberton are all mobile and versatile

I recon Brown becomes back-up and used when we need extra talls for specific teams/players.
With Haynes replacing Brown our team then becomes much m0re flexible and stronger at rebounding

As for Goddard, he is unknown ... cant skip the Haynes deal in the HOPE that Goddard comes good.
We hope he will but HOPE is not a plan

I recon we have now all the pieces for a strong defence for 5 years.. We need to add a couple more pieces and we can move up the ladder IMO
I also recon the club are really backing the 20-22 year old midfield brigade to continue to improve, Gresh, JB, Dunstan, Steele, Sinclair, Acres, even Freeman.
If that eventuates, they will be supported by a very strong, flexible, rebounding defence... as well as some more mature guys in ross, steven, stevens...

Lets hope it all clicks like it clicked for WB last year and like it clicked for Tigers this year. It is possible

Midfield progression: stats per year of our young midfilelders

Acres: 9,12,17,20. .. still only 21 years old
Billings: 15,15,20,23.. just turned 22
Gresh: 15,14….... just turned 20
Jack Sinclair, 10,13,21.... played as 22 year old this year
Luke Dunstan: 19,17,17,22.... played as 22 year old this year
Jack Steel 14,15,22.. still only 21

Freeman???

On average, possession counts improve steadily until 23 years of age. That is the normal progression, of course there are exceptions.
But this midfield could really explode in the next 2 years

You can never have enough quality players. Haynes is a gun. Id be extatic if we picked him up, especially if it's for a future 2nd rounder.

Not sure he is worth 7 or 8 by themselves.....so mmmm part of a package player deal? Or some picks back?
Pick 23 back to us seems fair.

So 8 for Haynes + 23.
Could we trade 8 (+43) down for two first rounders from Brisbane (12+18) or Tigers(15+16/17)?
Or is a pick in the teens too low for Hayes? (assuming a club would do such a deal! May depend on what Brisbane think will happen with their acadamy kids ?)

I guess we will need to use 8 and try to get back 23.... which we can hopefully use wisely!
If we use 7 well to draft a good kid then it will be a good off season
Good suggestion. I like where you are going with that... I guess the question then comes - what is better picks 23 + 43 or pick 17?

I supposes it depends on how many rookies we want to promote and how many list spots are available.
Another thing to explore is 7&8 for 2 and 19 (GCS) or 1&18 (BL) and then use 18/19 on Haynes and take 1/2 to the draft :)
Yes, we can dream!

Wanted Marchbank last year but missed out. Haynes in a similar mould. Club must reckon the hole in the list is still there. Brown was good cover this year but not particularly mobile and not a rebounder.

We were always in a risky situation if Brown or Carlisle we're injured.
Last year with Goddard injured we had no one to cover the key defenders.

Haynes is a gun but already 25 so half way through his career.
Hence why ud only pay a pick 20ish for him.

He's elite in his position and would be rated top 5 at GWS so 8 is on the mark.

If he's gun and he wants to come - get him - I still think we need somebody i like Trengove for Browns spot - I like Roberton and white at hb - Haynes was recruited as a mid/forward - even though he is a gun back I think our backs are tracking well - I recon he could be our version of Nat Fyfe - even if he's a slightly poor mans version - 90% as good - he would still be a fatastic get

saint6709 wrote: Haynes was recruited as a mid/forward -

It would be interesting to see how he would go as a mid with us. The GWS have so much midfield talent that players like Steele just do not get a chance to play there.

It would be ironic too as it wasa game against us that he started playing down back.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/t ... h78ct.html

"I played TAC Cup at centre half forward and then at the nationals on the wing. I got drafted as a tall midfielder, apparently, then got thrown down forward," the surfie-looking 23-year-old says.

"Then, late in my second year, against St Kilda, Chad Cornes went down the night before the game and they chucked me down back. I struggled a bit, didn't really know what I was doing. But Chad was out the next week, too, I went all right in that next game and that was that. I've been a defender ever since."

Haynes can laugh now at the way the Giants tried to fit him into their plans early on, but it is that versatility and willingness to do whatever job is asked of him that has made him such a valued member of the team.

The debate about if he is worth pick 8 - well he went pick 7 and after missing a lot of games through ijuries has shown he is definitely a pick 7. Arguing he is halfway through his career - well the flip side of that is we get him as he's entering his peak, rather than developing him ourselves for three to four years. The other argument is could we pick better? With our history nothing suggests we would. Perhaps better to have one pick in the top ten instead of two and put all or focus into ensuring we get that right, rather than hope we get on out of two right? If we can get a second rounder thrown into the deal then it's a no brainer for me. Use that second rounder on Stringer with a player thrown in to sweeten the deal - Lonie or Weller.

Tall versatile highly skilled midfielder / defender

What's not to like sounds absolutely perfect
