My thoughts on Alan Richardson and his strategy are best understood in a timeless quote by Muhammad Ali, " The man who has no imagination has no wings...no wings means he stays grounded, safe."

Spin
Put up Alan or go - I'm starting to think our lack of ability to shut down sides/handle any pressure is driven out of your game plan
We had GT corporate spin "belief clouds" "Training services" "Exit him in" (weird that one...) and I'm starting to think Alan is the next soon model up.....
Couldn't be aggressive if his life depended on it.... But do keep playing spuds like Weller and leaving kids out like White who are the future and deserved a game won't you??
Next year - win a final or sacking is my benchmark 5 years enough time , skill level still deplorable, forward 50 entries chaotic, sporadic with no structure

Yeah but Con, tell us what you really think of Richo.

And don't hold back.
I'm sure he is a lovely person privately.
I am merely talking about his footy related conduct.

Yeah imagine.

Why are people people talking up Richmond/Hardwick like a success story?

8 seasons, 179 games, 50% W/L - 0 finals won.

They are just as likely to go out in straight sets after arsing in 3rd spot, then finish 9th again next year.
Hardwick also won 15 games in his third season.

AR is nowhere near that.

Bloody hell.

Let's just sack Richo already before 2018 begins, don't participate in the trade period because we won't make the right calls and bypass the entire draft for the same reason.

Whilst the Saints are it lets just tear down the steel beams at the new Moorabbin that are already erected. Might as well stay at Seaford.

We should get rid of the men's side and replace it with a sole women's side in 2019 so no one gets too disappointed.

We don't want to stop that snowball of positivity.

To be clear I am not advocating to sack Richo.
The senior coach can only do so much anyway.

What I am strongly arguing for is more resources thrown at Assistant Coaches and Recruitment.

I agree with Con.

Richo's team selections and his inability to be proactive on matchday has left me with a lot of doubts over his coaching ability.

I actually agree with Con.

I think Richo might need some new ideas. I still reckon he's a good coach and developer but like everyone else on here I only see it from the armchair. Someone mentioned Hardwick got in a couple of new assistants and it seems to have helped Richmond's game plan massively.

One media muppett was talking about Dusty Martin (I think) and said that Hardwick has had no real impact on his play,
it's all from the recent addition of Blake Caracella...
we need a similar mentor/assistant coach to take our guys under the wing

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

That's right. If Richo is seen as the coach to take us up the ladder and a contender again, then there needs to be an overhaul of the current assistants. Player development and list management has gone backwards.

The Richmond supporter next to me yesterday said the same thing abt Caracella

Richo needs recent premiership players as assistant coaches around him.

So fairly similar between us and RFC on first glance - but they appear to have more dedicated development and VFL coaches plus a grappling coach whereas the Saints seem to have more nebulous admin positions.

Interesting point. Experienced players at the club (ie the ones who go back to GT era - not hard to work out who they are) have been known to refer to him as mini-GT. And not in a complimentary way.

Teflon I am as critical of our ball movement as you but lets see how we go with additional time and players added into our midfield before we sack Richo.

Very interesting Con the RFC do have a much more practical approach to their staffing it would appear. Thats why a lot of us have calling for a clean out and restructure of the Assistant staff.

+1 Maybe we can trade Bruce or try him in the back line. Never been the same as 2 years ago.

To be fair - it is hard to really match them up from afar because we dont know the inner roles of each individual.
But it is interesting to have a look at it.

Tigers have Caracella (2), Leppitsch (3), X Man, McRae (3), Rutten who are all pretty experienced.

I count 8 AFL premierships there.

And of course on top of that - Xman coached his own side to a NEAFL premiership.

Now that frightens me.........a lot
What I do see under Richardson and I did see this also under Thomas was a lack of defensive structure when sides got on a roll against us. Thomas era too we were accused of bombing long into fwd 50 and I see that today also

Richo is a good talker, lots of buzz words, hearts and minds stuff blah blah but great coaches typically have an ability to put in a system, process and style of play (great ones get it across to players) that stands up under pressure we obviously don't have that but in fairness to him we don't equally have all the cattle....

Your second para covers it. Lots of rah-rah, we've come to play, 100% effort 100% of the time but not much structure, system or drilling.

That fits the profile a bit
Good developer, motivator, good with impressionable kids......
Not necessarily an AFL Premiership coach so what do we do?
Extend his contract....
Mediocrity reigns at St Kilda ....

You can see in our ball movement we lack system and our finishing is terrible ....hearts and minds stuff won't change that...

He just strikes me as someone out of touch with reality.

The time to 'feel sick in the guts' was two weeks ago when we lost to Melbourne. Probably even earlier when it became apparent that our game plan was too easy to pick apart.

Everyone in the footy world knew the Melbourne game was the end of our season so not sure why AR was relying on the Dockers to beat Essendon?

This kind of stuff makes me cringe

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-08-28/a ... richardson

He seems unwilling to accept just how far off we truly are. He is full of buzz words and blathering on about 'effort' and being 'strong' but seems to lack any insight into the flaws in our game plan. Some of which is his responsibility. We are also not even a tough side anyway. Most of the time our tackles are brushed away like flies.
If we arent tough, skilled or well drilled. What the hell are we?

Yeah it's hollow isn't it?
What concerns me (and why I actually liked listening to Lyon when he was at his best after one of our losses) was Richardson offers nothing of substance as to where or why we are breaking down? It's just all emotive cliches (no wonder senior players call him mini GT.... king of corporate BS if ever there was....)

I truly fear we have another and if so we are set for years in the wilderness yet...

I'd prefer them all to remain at St Kilda but if the right offer is there, they can all be replaced.

We have very few other players with trade currency that would be worth letting go.

Players like Weller, Savage and Lonie could be used as trade bait, but in reality their value is very low.
Our biggest deficiency is in high-impact midfielders with explosive pace so I don't think we should be listening to offers for Steven. I agree that if anyone would give us a pick in the teens for Newnes we should take it; he solid but very much a vanilla player and I don't see him as a premiership-quality wingman. Jimmy could be offered up on the trade table if the price was right but at the moment he is best 22. Trading Bruce would be far too risky unless we had something significant coming back because we would be left with a team needing two of McCartin, Battle and Marshall to become key forward targets in 2018. Hickey should absolutely be floated as trade bait and moved on if we receive a decent offer. I still believe he can be a high-level AFL ruckman but it doesn't look like he's going to edge ahead of Billy and it's pointless to have a player in his prime and on decent money playing for Sandy.
