Jackson Trengove

Post: # 1695398Post Saintlester »

Word is that Trengove is out of favour at Port and will be headed back to Melbourne. Apparently manager is looking for a new deal for him.

Any thoughts on if hes worth a look. Played his best footy as a lock down key defender a couple of years ago but seems to have gotten lost as Port have tried him as a tall forward.

May be an upgrade on Nathan Brown as he is only 26 and is RFA.

I think it comes down to a cost thing...
Trengove has stagnated a bit over the last few years but on the service, he's the type of player that we're short on. Brown is fine for now, Goddard stays on the list but is no certainty at all...

The fact is we need more key defender types. He's a reasonable fit.

I'd go for him

Wants to stay at Port, but their offer was underwhelming.

Now testing the water to see who bites, but will most probably just be used to get a better deal at Alberton.

We should enquire, but I hope we don't put all our eggs in the Trengove basket.

AR should have the mail on him. Would be a handy pick up and would cost us nothing but salary cap space. Sounds like the PA offer is underwhelming so it may not take much to lure him over if we want him. I reckon he might attract a bit of attention. KP types normally do and his best was pretty good.

I think you're pretty tough, don't I?

I think he has limited potential. But that is opinion based on his play in recent time. I don't think he wants to play as a defender I remember him doing an interview about waiting for a chance to play up forward.

Why we can't get Lever baffles me.

Would be a very handy pickup for us. Right now if Brown or Carlisle go down we're back to relying on Roberton to play key defence again. Trengove is a genuine tall utility who can play forward, back or ruck. With Goddard and McCartin not looking any closer to establishing themselves Trengove would be very handy depth and possibly a better option that Brown in defence if he isn't needed elsewhere.

Grab Trengove and Matera as free agents and trade a 2017+2018 1st rounder for Kelly. Throw in Hickey or Gilbert to that trade if it helps get it done.

B: Geary, Brown, Webster
HB: Roberton, Carlisle, Savage
C: Acres, Kelly, Sinclair
HF: Billings, Bruce, Matera
F: Membrey, Trengove, Gresham

Foll: Longer, Steven, Ross
Int: Steele, Newnes, Dunstan, White

Fringe: Stevens, Weller, McKenzie, Marshall

If McCartin, Freeman and Goddard start to achieve their potential then that side changes quite a bit but it's not something we can count on at this stage.

Brown has reached his use by date
Goddard is not the saviour - lack of leg speed and time out of the game will make 2018 a tough ask for him
Would love to see Marshall trained as a full back - but the development coaches lack the initiative and foresight to do this. Instead he will languish at Sandy as the 3rd ruckman .
Trengove would slot into FB nicely

Brown has filled his role adequately and has at least another year in him so not passed his used by date at all.
Goddard has not shown anything worth cheering about yet so I am thinking he is at least a year away so I would draft another defender with one of our draft picks and an outside mid with the other

Trengove would be a bad mistake
