Hypothetical trades

Post: # 1694961Post Joffa Burns »

OK, our drafting has been reasonable since 2013, better than GC & GWS given their cream but sadly lacking compared to the likes of Adelaide who can draft and develop very good players consistently from late and rookie picks.

Assuming we are looking to play finals next year and want more than the development of Billings, Sinclair, Gresham, Mc Cartin, Steele, Acres et al to take us the next step and don’t want to wait three to four years for our two first rounders to develop.

Who do we trade for and what is a deal to get it done, what is reasonable? Would you do the trade?

IMO we can live without another KPP back-man for the next couple of years.
We need great foot skills, A grade talent and preferably outside speed.

Whitfield has the foot skills, Matera is A Grade talent and both will not cost the farm.
Kelly has everything but will cost the farm and a bit more.

I’d still love us to have a crack at Rocky as a free agent as we have the cash and he costs nothing as a free agent, he is A grade talent.
Also Motlop, while inconsistent he is devastating on his day and also an restricted FA.
I’d say Dusty is out of our league.

Trade 1
Our two first round picks to GWS for Josh Kelly
They gave up pick 9 and Dom Tyson (pick 3) for #2 to get Kelly

Trade 2
Hawthorn pick for Lachie Whitfield
Saints first round pick for Brandon Matera with their second round pick (#19 or #20) coming back

Trade 3
Two first round picks for Lachie Whitfield & Jacob Hopper with their second round pick (#25) coming back and a later shuffle

Trade 4
Hawthorn pick for Lachie Whitfield
Saints first round pick for Jake Lever

What would we have to give up for Jack Martin at GC?

Or do we just go to the draft???

If we could get Whitfield for Hawthorn's pick I would do it, butI would take our pick to the draft.

I would try for Rocky too.

Like your thinking Corfe, but Matera is not an A-Grader and neither is Rockcliffe!!!!!

Martin, Kelly, Dangerfield types are AFL A-Graders, not the two you have mentioned!!!!!

Probably worded badly, Matera is not an A grade player by a long shot but has A grade talent/ skill and could be elite if he puts it together.

The three you mentioned are super stars of the comp, if they constitute A grade there is probably only 8 or so A graders in the AFL.

an A-Grader will cost a lot of money and will be chased by clubs waving lots of cash.
Someone who is A minus, could be better value

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

I doubt we will get Kelly or Martin. Both will most likely stay just like Fyfe. I would like to get either but realistically it wont happen so lets get behind our draft team and hope we pick wisely. I would use both picks in the draft and get a defender like Jarrod Brander or Aaron Naughton and outside mid like Lachie O'Brien or Nick Coffield

I'd rather we keep Webster, improving well with each game.

Jesus trading out Webster , one of only a small minority who can hit a target by foot, is odd

Sounds like Geelong are going after Devon Smith & Hopper… they'll need to find some picks to get it done you'd think.

You'd have to back the cats, given their track record of getting deals done. I'd take Hopper in a heartbeat. Smith, I'm not so sure about. He's slipped a bit, but his best is still very good and a change of scenery might do him the world of good. We're in a much stronger trading position than the pussies.

would hate to lose either of these warriors

But have to trust the club with getting a very valuable player/s
Because we can't get something for nothing.
Giving up picks are fine, but a club might want an established proven player,
if only for depth in their own list.

Webster under contract/ Will the new club pay out his contract?

WTF??? Webster is on the verge of becoming elite.
No way we trade him ALTHOUGH
we do have too many half backs and webstwr is the only one with trade value atm. We must be backing in White, Rice, McKenzie, Savage.
Makes me think we are getting gun midfielders which means we have to give something and webster has value. Makes sense actually.

Out: Webster Armitage Lonie Hickey
Ins: Whitfeld and 1 of Kelly/Martin

That would be perfection and really we should be able to do it.

I like Joffas #4 scenario please....Whitfield and Lever are great value and we save $$ for 2019. Plus we do actually have mids with elite potential....

I'd be going hard on the free agents rocky from Brisbane and push hard for one of menzel or motlop from gelong, spend some money and save picks for elite talent in the draft. Prize another young talented midfielder Balic from Freo will be cheap and another Back man like Ali Ali from swans

Gives us 2 free agents
2 top ten draft pick
1 up coming Blackman
1 x promising mid
