Cheer Squad! You were GREAT!

Post: # 1689907Post thejiggingsaint »

In all the emotion and turmoil surrounding these past couple of days. The outstanding efforts of our Cheer Squad at Adelaide Oval needs to be acknowledged.

The hostility and malevolence contained within that Oval, had to be experienced to be believed.

On a day when it would have been SO much easier to maintain a low profile. In absolutely awful weather conditions. Surrounded by feral morons. Our Cheer Squad could have been easily excused for simply "going through the motions"

Did they lower our colours? NO!

Cheer Squad, you gave me inspiration to believe that we could achieve the impossible!

Cheer Squad, you gave me pride to wear the colours!

Kudos to every single one of you!

the jiggster has spoken.
Well said, kudos to you, sir, for giving credit to the hard-nosed and dedicated Cheer Squad
who stood up proudly under intense duress.

Bravo sir !

I recall going over there in the 90s for a game at Fooball Park (silent t).

Talk about feral.
Our cheersquad was being pelted with fruit from both sides and behind whilst the security guards just watched. Many were sitting with their hands on their heads to avoid being hit.
Then one member of our CS gently lobbed one piece of fruit back and about 10 security guards descended on him and violently dragged him out.

I was sitting a couple of bays round and a charming "gentleman" two rows in front of me of southern European origin held up a handmade banner demanding a sexual act be performed on him everytime the Crows got a goal and for extra effect or maybe for blind patrons he also yelled out the message. I was tempted to point out to this - let's just call him a "person" that his splendid and simple sign actually contained not one but TWO very basic spelling mistakes but thought better of it. It was never made
clear who was going to perform the act he was demanding but again I wasn't brave enough to ask!

All in all it was like visiting another planet.
(And we lost badly).

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Enrico, I know exactly how you felt. I was at Moron Park in 04 with my daughter and her two girl friends, all keen Sainters. The atmosphere right from entering the joint was scary! (and Ive been to PLENTY of UK soccer grounds) sitting just in front of us was Michael Gdanski and Molly Meldrum...... for the very first time since coming to Melbourne, I saw Molly maintaining a "low profile"     He looked petrified! (THE hat was NOWHERE to be seen, instead, a beanie was pulled right down over his ears!)

The Saints took the game right up to Port (who were still in "choking" mode at that time) and silenced the crowd. The G Trains 100th goal managed to disrupt our momentum  :(

The result is now history, and we didn't hang around at the final sireen. While walking to our bus one drunken yobbo gave me a mouthful of abuse, I walked on (at the urgings of my daughter!) he continued to taunt me, so I turned and began walking back to him.......... He went very quiet. VERY quick! That's all I had to do!

The Adelaide Oval is a magnificent and spectacularly beautiful arena, entirely worthy of staging our great code....... however, if a "palace" is occupied by PIGS...then a PIG STY it shall be!

Gee whiz, what's with these crowds at the Adelaide Oval being so ultra-feral?! I actually want to attend a Saints game there at some stage, but to hear this is a bit of a deterrent. Do these supporters not have any respect for the opposition supporters who have spent their hard earned on travelling from interstate and supporting their club who has been in the competition far longer than their expansion club?

It appals me to hear this. Good on you, Jiggster and our cheer squad for maintaining the peace and not sinking to the ferals' levels.

Nah, it was a bloody hole. A poor man's Waverley/VFL Park. I hear the Oval is a millions times better to watch footy.

Sainternist, In all honesty Colleague, it could be better in other areas of the Oval. The area where we were standing last saturday was at the open, North end...where that magnificent scoreboard still stands. Now there's an area called "the hill" where fans just congregate and stand, without any form of terracing or suchlike, literally just a "hill" and tis is where we found ourselves standing. The weather probably saved us from being harrassed even more than we were (plus the fact that they were winning albeit narrowly) as most of these big brave macho examples of SA manhood stayed under cover

I would not try to put you off going to a Saints game at Adelaide Oval.....BUT would urge that you select a game against the Crows (rather than Port) Another tip would be to get a spot in one of the stands, where there are plenty of security staff and police. I went to Moron Park in 05 ( a year after my experiences with Port ) for the qualifying final V Crows. Their crowd whilst loud and passionate, never made me feel as intimidated as the mingebags from Port did. Asa matter of fact, after we won, some of them were quite sporting!

Personally, I dont like standing areas like the hill. No security staff, too close to bars, too easy to have troublemakers "melt into the crowd" To hell with standing in places like that ever again!

Jiggster, the Hill sounds fantastic. I only do standing room. I hate how everyone is seated at these new softcock stadiums. The 21st century footy supporter is softer than ice cream!

I survived a number of games as a kid at Vic Park, Princess Park and Windy Hilly back in the 80s and 90s, so no teal coloured idiot is going make me feel threatened. I've heard that Crows fans can be just as bad over there.

I'm a Sainter through and through, and will live by the sword and even die by the sword, if I have to!

I must be getting old or something colleague, I just wanted to see the footy and barrack for my team. I didn't want any confrontations/ battles with other supporters. I was standing a good three metres away from the ferals ( around eight of them ) with my daughter and her friend, when Port went 13 points up she had one lunatic inches away from her face yelling obscenities, when I intervened, he looked ready to take me on ( well I am 72, 150cm, and 78kg so was probably about his "heavy" ) it was only one of his companions who had some semblance of brain dragging him away that stopped a VERY ugly situation from playing out.

I then approached a security steward, pointed these guys out (& let them SEE me pointing them out) and I then involved a police constable who hung around our area for the last moments of the game.

I have to "agree to disagree" with you about the " hill " ( at least as far as the one at Adelaide goes) it's a very dangerous thing to have loads of blokes standing around, in the proximity of bars, with an acute absence of stewards or security. Can you imagine what it would have been like if I'd had my grandkids with me ( as I had the previous week at the SCG)

It's NOT about being " macho" or any of that crap, but about being able to watch your team in safety. You prefer standing? Good for you. I stood for YEARS at English soccer grounds in the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. The myth about the terraces has assumed a nice warm fuzzy aspect to it. I can tell you mate, when you herd blokes into stadiums like that, like animals, then they'll act like animals. I hated the crushing and bruising that went on. Blokes pissing down the terraces, down your leg if you weren't careful! Disgusting! In the wake of all that went on at a Hillsborough and the Heysel Stadium, I'm astounded that some want a return to standing room.
I can't believe that Liverpool supporters want to revert to standing!

No, you're okay, Jiggster. Whenever the television cameras cut to a crowd shot of you, you're always standing and cheering on the mighty Saints.

If these teal or liquorice all-sorts idiots are accosting me for simply supporting my beloved Sainters, then it means WAR. Will be taking no prisoners, Jiggster!
