This pass the ball mentality has to stop

Post: # 1687009Post skeptic »

It is driving ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!!!!

Under pressure, kick short or handball to a contest
Run into a potential shot on goal, pass it short to a player under pressure

Get a break in the midfield, chip it short to a player on the wing

We're in contest in the middle, handball it from one pressured player to another until it's turned over

We are completely adverse to kicking the ball forward long... unless of course it's because we fluffed around with it on the flank for 7+ handballs so we decide to bomb it long to an opposition forward.

Sick of watching this style of play

I posted this in the match thread... this is our game plan

Tap the ball and pass to mid, hand ball that to another mid, the handball back and fourth before a quick pass 20m to the side, that guy handballs behind him before a short pass back where it comes from. Pass the ball to the left, handball one to the other to the other, oh oh we're under pressure, hand ball out the back to another guy under pressure, and to another and to another, quick pass the ball, some how we're at half forward, short pass to a contest, hand ball to a man running into 50m, kick short to a contest, TURNOVER

Sydney kick Long to the centre, mark, handball to the running player, kicks long to a contest, mark, goal.

Acres plays on from a free in the forward line (that would have been a shot) only to pass it short to a contest

And then in the backline Geary passes short to a contest

First thing they teach kids in the juniors. Don't kick short to a contest.

It seems like they are trained to either
- kick to a contest
- kick straight to an opponent
- handball to a man under pressure
- or chip it backwards/sidewards to give the opposition more time to flood our forward line

Time after time after time after time they did one of those four things.

Sydney on the other hand mostly moved the ball forwards quickly and consistently kicked to a teammate on his own.
Maybe we could tweak our gameplan to emulate them?

Tweak? It would be a major reconstruction project and we're putting all our efforts into rebuilding Moorabbin.

We bomb into 50. Sydney bomb into 50.

They just do it without half a dozen peripheral movements of the ball. So their forwards were on straight line runs.
When you don't have to change direction, you can jump and attack the ball. Our poor forwards are on 2nd and 3rd movements that don't allow for that kind of attack.

It is all too sad, heartbreakingly kick the dog territory. And I love my dog.

You are absolutely spot on! Geee the saints were kicking it wider, and wider, then backwards, and further backwards, until finally a turnover and score to sydney.

I noticed players not giving options down the wing, comes back to desire. Not enough hunger to demand, scream for that footy.

Yes, the swans were so direct and punishing. We'd spend 15 kicks to get it forward, the swans would do it in about 5. Reducing the number of kicks going forward means the oppositions backmen don't have as much time to prepare. We gave the swans an eternity to prepare for our attacks.

Need to be more direct, more decisive.
