Is roo worth a list spot

Post: # 1686372Post older saint »

I have been thinking the way the game is changing and player management of younger players becoming the norm , why not with Roo.

Assuming he wants to play surely he is better than the last player on the list . Why not working out once the fixture arises a system of when he does play and when rested , based on 6 day breaks, travel, opponents, and obviously form. Roo for 14-15 games a year is surely better than player 42 and if form doesn't warrant it not much lost really.

If we need the spot for someone else, NO.
But he is an ideal place holder for a large amount of cash to make up the minimum permissible under the salary cap.
If the club has already exceeded the minimum under the salary cap then admin heads should roll.
We need that salary cap space to win our next premiership.

YES!!!

He has played several excellent, even match-winning games this year.

Has been off the mark in two or three others where he was obviously playing sore.

Assuming he can get up for maybe 12 to 15 games next year, definitely worth his place. Just look at the percentage of games won with him in the team compared to those without him.

Yes, don't let Nick leave on a bad note. It wouldn't be a good look for the club and he's done more than any other player in the Saints history.

He should be on the list as a player/mentor/coach for next year. Its honestly time for Bruce, Membrey and McCartin to finally take over the forward line if they haven't already. Then add Battle and Marshall maybe if the above drop off or get injured.

Methinks it's just the three 6 day breaks , his knee has no time to recover. Agree we should manage him next year and play him with well spaced rests ...
if he plays a blinder the press will say he should play on , they ebb and flow game by game , they say the same with all the aging stars.

I think this is a good idea and worth exploring. When fit he's still our most important player.

I don't understand why this is an issue?

He's still one of our best 10 players and he's on one leg.

Every opposition team would rather play a St Kilda without Nick Riewoldt than with him.

Let's re- visit this in 6 weeks time.

I still don't understand why he is trying to playing every single game.

We need to trade two of McCartin, Marshall and Battle if he rewoildt plays on. Why have high commodities wasting away on wind swept grounds in the 2's if we aren't going to give them an opportunity.

He needs to go, the entire football world can see it, apart from some Stkilda supporters. I'd be dissapointed if he didn't step aside himself. Hodge/ Hawthorn did it, let's not do a Stkilda thing.

Silly comparison to Hodge. Roo is ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE to play in a winning flag side. That is it in a nutshell. Early in the year I thought it was a no brainer for him to play in next season. We do need him and will be worse off without Roo. The big issue is if his body can come up enough to play 12 to 15 games next year or not. I'm. I'm not sure, but really don't like the pressure his management are giving the club.

Well - unfortunately that's "the entire football world" except for Nick. And if he won't go gracefully, the club's got a difficult decision to make. Nobody wants to disrespect him by forcing him out like North did Harvey but if he stays, his status as a club champion becomes very problematic week to week.

What I mean is - presumably, it was his call whether he played last week or not. He was clearly not up to it but decided to play anyway. Can we wear that all next season when - hopefully(!) he'll be keeping Paddy and/or Marshall and/or Battle out of the team? Who is going to step in and tell him no? I'd hate to see him dropped to the 2s next year like Dempster.

Every player should get a game on merit- if your form is good enough, then you get a game. We don't seem to be getting a lot of inspirational game-changing leadership form the senior players this year including Roo, and just the odd cameo isn't enough. It is time to blood Battle and Marshall and whoever else is in the mix. I think Roo should retire gracefully- he has done his job.

Pretty accurate. If his knee stands up he is still our best key forward, so its just a matter of how many games he can play on that knee.
I wonder whether he thinks about Robert Harvey i.e. retired in 2008 and wasnt around for '09, '10
Either way, just hope its his decision and he goes out the best way possible

I think the Club and Roo should be left to make the decision for the best for both parties, then, if they can not agree, the Club makes the final call!!!!!

All media build up at the moment, just bottom feeders like Caro looking for a story that isn't there, just trying to extract some form of revenge or poison our/he's image!!!!!

There is no doubt he is in the best 42 or 22 for that matter and still will be next season and maybe even the season beyond, who knows, assuming his body holds up.

I would like to see him announce his retirement now for the end of the season (as per Hodge & Lenny did) and be celebrated as a champion & superstar of the game for the remainder of the season and go out on a high with some juice still in the tank. I also think he'd regain the bounce knowing he had only a few games to play and may inspire the team for a concerted push at finals this year.

Nothing can diminish his legacy, but I'd hate to see him limp through next year which could potentially happen and have his career end on a less than positive note.
We are not going to contend this year or next so I think we need to keep building.

Still better than most clubs 1st choice key forward but he is 100% better than any clubs second forward which is his role now.

Can't believe this is debated.
We should just come out an offer him another year.
He could still warrant a spot in 2019 IMO
No brainer. End the speculation now.

Is Roo worth a list spot? What a stupid question. He has missed about three matches, and he is still one of our leading goal kickers. Only Bruce and Membrey have kicked more goals, and both have played more matches. They have each kicked 26, Roo has kicked 24 in 13 games.

Happy for Nick to go on for two more years, playing 50% to 60% of games.
Player game management is becoming as important as list management.
Let's show the way!
