Inevitably the conversion got around to whether he and Joey would go on next year. Standard answers, as you would expect.

But, he did note something I've been bangin' on about for a while. While he was talking about Joey's form, in the context of his value to the club, he noted Joey had a very important other role:

'On field coaching', a la Luke Hodge at the Dorks.

Roo didn't frame it in the 'all leaders have to ensure the coach is supported on field' context. He was far more specific. And, I've thought for some time Joey's on field coaching role is similar to Hodge's - it's not the 'give more effort' type, it's about how we organise and execute the way we play e.g. where to go, when, and what to do when you get there. It takes someone with real game sense and a cool head.

Apart from that aspect, Joey's been more than solid. Top 3 average disposals and kicks, disposal efficiency Top 6, and just a tick under 80%.

All up, stay on Joey.

Let's face it we only have three veterans in Roo, Joey and Gilbert and all have been having god seasons.
I think that creates a good balance and still leaves 19 places for the younger players.
I think it would be a mistake to lose these players for next year.

Gilbo is definitely the Holy Spirit. Roo - the Father - is understandable. That's a concept everyone gets. Joey - the Son - is also fairly intelligible to most people, no matter their level of theism. But the Holy Spirit? That doesn't make sense to anybody!

Only the Holy Spirit - incomprehensible as it is - could make an impossible spoil, follow up with a team-lifting tackle in a transcendent second effort, win a free kick and then kick it directly back to the opposition. Nobody can understand the Holy Spirit.


He has had an excellent season Gilbert. Possibly top 5 B&F at the moment. Impresses no end live at the game.

Sorry, but I totally disagree with just about everything you say.

Joey has been an integral part of the St Kilda furniture but his time will come as it does for all great warriors and it will be at the end of 2017.

Actually, can I take back part of everything you say.

Joey's on field coaching. You are right about that IMO. He's been great at mentoring the up and coming and I see no reason why he can't keep doing that, but off the field.

We have some pretty decent, ready made replacements in White and Rice who need to be given game time and that is very unlikely to happen if Joey continues playing.

The club will make a call on his future and I think it will be the right call when they tell him it's time to hang up the boots.

That's what I think anyhoo.
