Let's give Newnsy some love

Post: # 1679753Post Milne »

Although a bit under the radar he always gives his absolute best and regardless of the team performance rarely has a bad game. Blokes like Newnsy, although not out and out stars, are the guys who work their guts out every game to give the team the best chance of the four points.

This post is my way of showing how much he means to us.

He is a bit like Andrew Thompson, runs hard, has great vision, gives everything for the team remember his concussion against the Swines,
it says a lot about his character of goiing in hard and putting body on line,
unlike 2 players who aren't quite as committed- one who is now in the Zebs, and another who might retire end of year.

Newnes is very brave and has a lot of skill. I have been critical of him, but he has a crack every week and is in the leadership group
The comparison with Andrew Thompson is valid, see an extract from Wikipedia:

Thompson was noted for his hard work ethic and consistency and this led to him winning the 1999 Channel 7 Player of the Year Award.
His outstanding and consistent form also earned him a Trevor Barker Award for St Kilda's Best and Fairest player in 2000.
Despite a dismal year for the Saints, when they finished last,
Thompson continued toiling and was a shining light in an otherwise disappointing side.

and this from the Saints' website:
Following a best and fairest year in 2000, he was named St Kilda's stand-in captain the following season
after Robert Harvey injured his knee. A permanent fixture in the Saints engine room for 221 games,
Thompson was highly respected for his desperation, commitment and durability
.

Agree. One of those players who at the end of their careers that will get plenty of kudos for the way they went about it. Im hoping he still has another level in him and will become one of our greats.

I think he should be our next captain.

In fact I was bullish about his chances of replacing Roo.

He's nothing like Andrew Thompson and your cheap shots about Joey's character are pathetic… BringBackMadDog was right.

I think Skeptic meant that he's underrated in the eyes of the media and the general spectators of AFL football.

And I agree, he goes quite unsung.

Definitely underrated outside of the saints. Many opposition supporters wouldn't even know who he is!

you are a fair dinkum joke. Joey has been a star for us for so many years, to besmirch his character in this way is just disgraceful. He may not be an in and under beast but he has never taken a backward step in his career. Its one thing to criticise its another to talk complete and utter crap.
BTW Newnes is nothing like Andrew Thompson as a footballer

This whole player assessment thing is like that old "Ford vs Holden" argument.
