Hawks pick. What do we do with it?

Post: # 1677181Post borderbarry »

Hawks pick. What do we do with it?
If it is a to[ three pick, do we.
A. Use in the draft?
B. Trade it out for two first round picks, giving us three?
C. Trade it for a player?

If it ends up 4 onwards, we should just take it to the draft.

THOUGHTS...

It we end up with a top 3 pick we really need to take it to the draft. We badly need top end talent!!

Therefore I'd try & secure Kelly it our pick or a future.

I will vomit if we downgrade a top 3 pick into 2 later picks.

I think re-visit this question in August.
Too early to say at this stage.

Depends on whether Kelly nominates or not. If he does I think we have to do everything to get a trade done. He is exactly what we need. GWS will want that pick and another first rounder from us (either this years or next). If we're lucky we might get a second rounder back.

Hawks pick and our future first round for Kelly
Our first pick this year and Longer for May
Secure Rockliff free agent.....that should be the trade plan

There was talk in 2014 that we were looking at trading our number 1 pick for two picks in the top 10. So maybe we could've picked up a 5 and 10 ( that would've landed us potentially De Goey and Cockatoo) or perhaps 6 and 8 ( potentially Peter Wright and Marchbank). I would have been happy with that

OK, my thought only...

If Kelly chooses Saints
Two first round picks to GWS for Kelly
Hope to get their first rounder back but probably get a second rounder with him or some steak knives

Assuming Kelly doesn't want to come.
1/ two best mids in draft
2/ trade both first rounders 3 & 8 to GWS
Return Whitfield & Hopper & their first pick 17
3/ trade both first rounders to GWS
Return Whitfield, Smith & Hopper - guess I'm dreaming
4/ Hawks pick on best mid and our pick on Whitfield

None of the above discount free agency options

Another player from GWS of interest would be Himmelberg.

GWS wont have pick 17. They lose 1000 points over the Whitfield affair. Their first pick will be 25 or 26. So maybe it might pay to do a Carlton, and say our lst rounder for 2017 and 2018, Whitfield, Hopper, and Himmelberg;

Take Hawthorns first to the draught.

You are correct but...
I'm dreaming that our first two picks say 3 & 8 gives us Whitfield, Smith & Hopper!

3 & 8 is too much for Whitfield and Hopper but IMO not enough for all 3.

3 & 8 might get Whitfield and Smith

It's all speculation on my behalf.

Didn't know that about the points.
The very little I've seen of Himmleberg I like.
Taranto is another very talented youngster.

I like your scenario above bb.
How about we go the whole Hogg.

This year's two first rounders and next year's first rounder for...
Whitfield, Smith, Hopper & Himmleberg + GWS #25 this year

Trade both our first round picks for established star(s).

Do not trust the recruiters to find any fresh talent.

No, go to the draft.
Not impressed at all with Carlisle, trailing 5m off his opponent every time....

We will be stupid if we don't take the best young midfielder we can get .
So i reckon they do some brilliant trade and we'll end up with kids that look promising but are b graders at best .

Does anyone back us to get it right at the draft?

Use it at the draft - best outside mid with skills and pace available.

personally im not a fan of our drafting strategy weve had 1 pick pay off in the past 4 Richardson Drafts (Gresh). yet to get consistency from Paddy or JB. The picks at the time were defensible but retrospectively they havent paid dividends as of yet. So im hesitant to say lets go to the draft with 2 top 10 picks. Unless one of them falls in the top 3 i cant see the value. LDU, Rayner and Fogarty are probably the big 3 at the moment. The other concern is if Kelly does in fact nominate us we will have to give up picks to get him. i could see a scenario where its Kelly and pick 16-18 for our 2 firsts. Because at the back end of that draft we could get a Hunter Clark type.

im dreaming in this scenario but if the football gods allowed us to go. Keep hawks pick and trade Saints 2017&18 First rounders for Kelly that would be ideal.

Definitely trade - cant rely on the recruiting team to get it right.

if it were we had a bunch of later round picks id back us in. we seem to be good at finding the systematic diamond in the rough. Top end talent these blokes are hopeless.

If we end up with two top five picks, which may be on the cards atm, it would be hard to trade them away. The risk is getting our selections right. To early to say which is right, but say 3 and 5 would be a boon. If we get it right.........
