Contract Shockers
Many of us have considered Ameet Bains as some kind of savant but I feel that may end up being premature.
Sure we got lucky with the Hawks draft pick deal as they were desperate to get JOM but the following contract extensions have me going
Longer - 2018
Wright 2018
Minchington - 2018
Armitage 2019
Pierce - 2019
Dunstan - 2019
McKenzie - 2019

Re: Contract Shockers
Which of these players will still be playing AFL football after 2019?

Re: Contract Shockers
Only Mckenzie and Pierce seem the bad ones there, the rest should have next year. Far from shockers Dunston at 2019 ain't great but not bad either but put into context of clubs circling at the time of there resigning's. Armo is no prob a great player who will come back.

Re: Contract Shockers
Wright is a bit of
because he started in 2013, and has just been in and out,
he's had mostly VFL games, and only a handful of senior appearances.
Someone at the club has seen something in him and figured
that he might come good.
Maybe contracts are structured in that way so they can plan 2 and 3 years ahead
and know exactly where they stand re salary cap.
It's not about how much promise they have, it's how much you're paying in total.
Just forward planning/budgeting/forecasts
I really don't see a problem.

Wright is 23. Dunstan 22 going on 32. Minch 23, Longer 24, Pierce 22, Armo 29 and injured.
If Armo gets his body right then he might still be good in 2018/19 but that is a big IF at this stage. The rest arent going to improve much and just arent AFL standard. Simple as that.
The only one who might still be ok is McKenzie (21) and that is looking 50:50 at this point. Still absolutely no need to give him such a long contract. I am sure he would have taken a contract until 2018 happily. Not like he has offers lining up. Has not established or proved himself at AFL level at all. Why give him until 2019? Seems ridiculous on form shown.

They might want to secure players, not so much to keep the players happy, but so they can look on their database and know exactly where the list isCon Gorozidis wrote:magnifisaint wrote:What a reactionary thread

in terms of who can we delist this year, next year, and 2019.
The fringe players will just play Zebs until their contracts run out.
A contract doesn't mean the club thinks those bods are destined to play many senior games.
It's just bums on seats, basically.
If we have to delist 4 each year (is that right?)
contracts ending this year are
Sinclair
Savage
Rooey
Joey
Gilbo
Lonie
Holmes
Marshall (rookie?)

Longer needed to be locked away to keep his trade value up
Wright looks incredibly unlikely of making it long term.
I like Minch but it appears richobdirsnt rate him, which is a bad sign.
Arno he'll play more good football yet
Pierce - not sure about that contract, how many years can you develop a player for when there are only 40 spots on the list? He needs to show something this year.
Dunstan & Mckenzie - both worth persisting with.

Those that are contracts to 2019 will be fine.
Dunstan can play, Longer is trade bait, wright is a very good 21-22nd player...tough and quick. Minchington the only one that is dodgy....Armo looks like a bad one as well but who would have thought he would have such a bad run with his body

Wright is quick and tough yes......but he is 23 and simply cannot get a kick even in the VFL.The Recruit wrote:Sinclair

How does that make him a 'very good' 21-22nd player? His inability to get a kick at VFL level is a serious concern. At 23 he should be getting over 25 in the VFL most weeks. He struggles to get 10.
I think he is in the wrong sport and should switch to UFC/MMA.

Re: Contract Shockers
I think questioning these contracts asks more questions about player development than it does about contracts.
Would you have questioned this at the time they were signed or applauded signing up the future?
The fact they have not come on as expected poses the question IMO

Seems to me a disconnect between the perception of the player and the player's actual performance.Joffa Burns wrote:I think questioning these contracts asks more questions about player development than it does about contracts.

Is the footy dept saying to the contract team 'this guy is a gun'. Maybe the footy dept are over rating our own which is not hard to do when you spend so much time looking internally.
We were all told Longer was going to be a star this year based merely on a pre-season training campaign.
