Devon Smith & Jacob Hopper
Both Smith & Hopper are reported to be wanting to head to Melbourne at seasons end. You would think they would both add heaps to our current midfield and would be a great contingency plan if Kelly falls through yet we havent heard much chatter about them at all? Surely we are interested - ITK's?

Re: Devon Smith & Jacob Hopper
The reality is that GWS simply HAS to lose probably about that many as they cannot fit all their talent into a first 22 anyway and secondly as they cannot afford to pay all their players anywhere near what they are now becoming worth.ausfatcat wrote:hmmm 3 top young players leave gws in the same year? They will play hardball with a few of them
At present they have had so many injuries that it would have crippled any other club, but there they sit on top of the ladder and a game clear to boot!
Unfortunately they are now managing their list beautifully where they can for many years yet to lose good players every year as they can then trade them for low pics. That plus the Academy Rort means that they are topping their list up each season with several more young guns.
So effectively what is happening is that they lose some guns that they cannot afford to keep their Salary Cap in check, but get in some new young guns on minimum wages which then allows them to just keep this cycle going.
So GWS are yet to peak, and when they do they will still have a pipeline on superb young talent refreshing the team for many years yet.
After a couple of flags the AFL may cut off the Acadmey Rort which will slow things down, but not end it.

This is why the concessions given to GWS was too generous.
They will keep getting high first rounders each season as they lose players and it is self perpetuating.
I can see them staying top four almost indefinitely

And winning Flag after Flag - but never actually reaching their full potential as the salary cap pushes their older players to other clubs.longtimesaint wrote:This is why the concessions given to GWS was too generous.

Wish we had their problem!
