Harvey held the previous record of 118, and Mitchell was quick to point out the St Kilda legend's feat was more impressive than his own.

"I grew up a St Kilda supporter watching Robert Harvey very often," Mitchell said of Harvey, who played 383 games and won two Brownlow medals during a decorated career.

"It's a bit of a different game now - there's 450 possessions in a game, whereas back then there was probably 350.

"So it's a bit easier now. It won't be too long until I get passed by one of these young guns who are getting 40 or 50 every now and then.

Isn't that why he went to West Coast where he was virtually offered a coaching role when he retires.

Robert Harvey in his prime was the best midfielder in the game. Apparently games are won or lost in the midfield?

Still, we under sell his greatness

His 97/98 was close to the best two seasons ever played by a saint
For a start he got 60 Brownlow votes
Won the media awards
Averaged 32 possessions
Had one game where he had 46poss and kicked 4 goals

He was All Australian 7 times in a row

I just don't think he gets the kudos he deserves

Imo he is comfortably the greatest saint and should be an AFL legend/StK legend

I feel it is because he played for so long and people forgot how good he actually was in his prime, they think of his last very very good 8 years not his sublime 13 years before that.

Look at his Wikipedia page 1988 to 1993 year as "early career" 94 to 96 "rising career" that's normally a entire career just about and had won 2 B&F's and 4 all Australians during that period.
