Richo v horse

Post: # 1671716Post mr six o'clock »

It was a case of same old saints today v the swine
I know the swine are a good side but richo seems to have no answers to the horse's coaching tactics.
We match them for a while then do sfa in the second half.
Discussed with friends at half time that the game was over
Unfortunately i was right
Very disappointing performance
We had it all to play for and barely gave a yelp

Why not give Carlisle ten minutes forward?

I can't remember us getting so comprehensively out coached - couldn't get it out of the backline, couldn't get it into the forward line, couldn't switch play without going 80 metes backwards and couldn't use th corridor.

Just smashed all across the ground for four full quarters. On our own turf too.

Probably the third game this season where Richo has been pantsed in coaching. Good developer of players, but an ordinary match day coach IMO

One problem is we can't take a mark in the forwards ( last week as well) and we seem disorganized in the forwards.
Swapping Bruce for Paddy had no positive improvement.

The game felt like it was mainly played on Swans terms. Very stop/start, congested and contested with their classy midfield able to handle the congestion better . We like a run and gun model to get our flow on to get all players involved and energised and run in waves. We rarely came out of the back cleanly, we always seemed to be under pressure and unsure where to go.

Swans were able to pick their way through us be we couldn't do it to them. In the second half SWans were able to get Franklin and Tippet in one on ones by using some shorter kicking to drag Saints defenders up the ground.

It was blindingly obvious that kicking backwards after going forward wasn't working at all

We were actually winning contested ball quite comfortably in the 1st half so why we didn't change it up and kick long down line to a contested situation and try and get players around that next contest has me stumped - even if it went over the boundary line we get a throw in out of the danger zone

That said a few times I saw in the 2nd half our set up at the boundary throw ins was woeful with all of our guys behind their opponent and a Swan loose it back - by that stage though the game was over but we got to get smarter

Newnes was a huge loss like Webster last week

Tend to agree. I love the guy but if his players arent playing at %110 effort and his structures are getting sliced he has no answers. Today was a case for throwing the magnets around just to break up the strangle hold Sydney had.

Carlisle forward, Roo to defence for a 1/4
Roberton into the middle.
Gilbert forward.

He says he wants his players to be flexible but he never uses it and thinks outside the square. Plus can someone tell him that there are a million other adjectives available to him other than strong, positive or disappointing.

Apart from the fact we were turnover experts, we had virtually NO forward line.

Our list needs some work.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

all year our contested marking stats have been scarce. reassuring to know this was addressed by removing Bruce.

very much agree - they dictated the tempo and stopped us coming out the back. Our mids won the clearances, but butchered it going forward.

I think coaching had a bit to do with todays result. The absolutely sliced through us down the middle and made it hard for us to run it out of defence. As a result, we were never able to get quick movement into the forwards. Something needed to change in the way we moved the ball. Of course, it would help if we could hit targets too.

Swans defensive spread was awesome and they zoned and made space when they had the ball beautifully - sign of an experienced side that have played a lot of footy together

Keep the faith peeps we will get there

Our forward entries are painful , we are a shocking side to watch even when we're winning we are ugly. Paddy has zero chance to produce the the way we hack it in and set up. It's a blight on the history of the game the way its played today. Imagine being a forward, they've almost been made redundant . Time for a forward 60 zone that a ff/fb can't leave, games might be worth watching again

We have one game plan - when sides kick and mark and slow the game down we are caught out.
Melbourne did it, Geelong did it in the last qtr, Carlton tried to do it, Sydney did it.
When the game is not played on our terms - the coach needs plan B.

We're just not good enough.

Not enough talent, and generally unskilled across the board.

You can't polish a turd.

We've lost to Melbourne, West Coast, Geelong and now Sydney.

Only beaten rubbish teams, and a GWS team that is off the boil and was badly undermanned when we played them.

It is what it is.

That's simply not true.

We have about 10 different 'game plans' for every conceivable state of the game and scenario. All clubs do.

Yeah, probably, but round 1 seemed like an effort thing too, whereas yesterday the effort was there but we just couldn't do anything with the ball when we had it - except turn it over.

Yep.

What difference would coaching make when we are slow, can't kick, can't hand pass, forwards can't mark, and we make poor decisions.

A few of our kicks were so poor l couldn't work out what the player was actually trying to do

Our selectors need coaching (not to mention our recruiters).
Why do we default to the same players - loading up on the same types?
Pierce for Longer - and we go from 0 kicks, 5 hballs and 1 mark to 10 kicks, 5 handballs and 6 marks.
Savage - we need run and carry off halfback - especially with Webster injured.
Rice is a good, tough young player with a nice kick and has some pace.
We need to change things up!
We have too many inside types - we need to land a Hannebery in the draft - some A grade outside midfielders who are also tough - not just be after a Fyfe. I'll take Hannebery - even Brad Hill - over Fyfe any day. We need to get the balance right.
Balance, pace, spread, skill.

If it is our turf then exploit the advantages.
Some teams play their home games in the blustery outdoors but we can play in an enclosed space with no wind.
Some teams play their home games with the sun in their eyes but we can play in a sun free environment.
A few fans and the empty medallion club on the waterside get to overrule the blinded majority of saints fans sitting on the CBD side of the ground.
The wankers who aprroved the design of the ground have never had the sun in their eyes as a player or spectator.
This ground points north instead of north east for afternoon games.
