It's certainly shaping up that way. Last year was pretty even, evidenced by the fact that Footscray won it from 7th, after being well beaten by us in Round 18 and then losing 2 of the next 5 (before winning 4 straight!).
One of the most even years that I can recall was 1976. After being fifth, we lost our last 4 to finish 2½ games out of the five, but not before beating Hawthorn who went on to win the flag. The team second from the bottom was just 4½ games out of the (then) five.
Of course, by the end of the H&A games, injuries might have widened the gap somewhat. But it seems to me that, even at this early stage, teams that make the final 8 will be entitled to think they are a chance. It would still be nice to finish in the top 4.
