Webster's Helicopter Handballs

Post: # 1668684Post Johnny Member »

He's a bit lazy with his skills I reckon Webster.

Anyone notice his habit of shooting off helicopter handballs? ie. he hold the pill sideways and makes contact to the side of it, like a checkside, instead of a drop punt.

I remember when I was a kid at training once down at Moorabbin, and Peter Hudson called Jack Daniels out of a training drill as he was doing the same thing. It was right in front of me, and Hudson actually had to explain to Jack how freakin' hard it can be to receive one of those handballs when under pressure, and that he needed to get it spinning upright. I was actually shocked that a coach had to explain that to a player! He even showed him how to hold the pill properly when handballing.

Anyway, Webster has developed this habit.

He should just throw it like most players do.

Exactly, a spinning ball, no matter in which plane(s) it is spinning is hard to catch.

Now the rules require that the hand holding the ball be stationary and be punched.
But the umpires interpretation seems to be that if you touch the ball with your fist it is fine no matter how far the holding hand throws and guides the ball.
Just make sure the umpire sees you make a fist with one hand.

Imagine if Huddo tried to sort out Jayson's kicking

Not even Huddo could've sorted out JD's kicking! On another note, this sounds like a circus act. "Roll up, Roll up! See Jimmy Webster and his amazing helicopter handballs!" :D If Jimmy does need to improve in one area, that is closing the gap between his best and worst. He's Gilbo's apprentice. The best is very good, his worst makes you face palm. Fortunately, his worst has been very rare this year, hence his consistent appearance in the senior team. Has lots of improvement left in him. Very exciting! And pleasing! Mustn't forget the pleasing bit.

There is a huge difference between set shot goal kicking and field kicking.

On the topic of handball, is it just me or does Blake Acres handball with his wrist? It always looks a little strange.

True, but why? It would seem to be a triumph of instinct over thought. Of course, it's not only in AFL. Have a look at penalty shoot outs where players who normally kick the ball at over 100km/hr, have it dribble off the boot so that even Joe Hockey could save it.

I'm sure we have all played the game of watching the direction that a player's leg goes to pick its destination. The physics of kicking (conservation of momentum) turns out that the ball travels in the direction that it is kicked. The trick then is to make sure that the leg swings in an arc that is aligned to the centre of the goal line. Obviously easier said than done.

I used to do that as a kid because the waterlogged ball used to hurt my fist.

Do these helicopter handballs come with winches?

Webster is improving week by week and well on the way to becoming a gun defender. He's quick and he's tough and I feel confident with the ball in his hands, despite last week's howler. No ceiling on this guy.

J Webb has been pretty solid the last few weeks. AS far as whether his handballs helicopter or not who the F cares?

I'm more worried about his short kicks deep in defence that go straight to the opposition, seems to be one a week.

It is called tanking.

Set shot goal kicking you don't have any pressure or fear of a tackle from an opponent and you get 30 seconds to dispose of the ball.

P.S. the waterlogged ball used to hurt my foot when I was kid.
But then I don't think the drop punt had been invented.
Drop kicks were all the rage.

Personally I find field kicking far easier... it's instinctive and natural

Set shot over a man on the mark has more pressure imo

It's easier to coach/change set shot kicking

I do. That's why I posted about it.

I like talking about footy, all aspects of it. That's why I post on a forum, I think that's actually what forums are for.

I also ignore topics that dont interest me. But that's just me.

Like putting, it's the ones that you are expected to make that are the most nerve-wracking. With a snap on the run, at least you'd have the excuse that it was a difficult shot. Then you can let instinct take over.

For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline

Jimmy Webster will be there
With his amazing helicopter handballs, what a scene!

Over man buns and horses hoops and garters
Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!
In this way Mr. K. will challenge the world!
