It's time Paddy

Post: # 1667303Post Joffa Burns »

Kick a bag today against Nth Ballarat and make a statement.
Roo is hobbling and looks like he could use a week or two off.

The time is perfect for Paddy.
Come the moment, come the man.

This wind that has sprung up has ruined the day for big forwards, showers coming too.

He will get in

1/ When he earns it
2/ When there's a spot available

We missed a marking presence in our forward arc.

Until Acres had his brief time forward - and that turned the game.

Mc Cartin should be in regardless.

We have enough mids able to rotate forward (noting Sinclair's performance and the absence of Armitage and Dunstan) to replace Minchington with Mc Cartin.

The forward structure will not change

Two talls
Two smalls
1 medium/defensive
1 high forward

It's been the same structure for three years

Depending on how he goes today. If Paddy has a good one he can give Roo a much needed spell.

Richo on Paddy coming back in:

"While McCartin is contracted to the Saints until the end of next season, there is industry scuttlebutt that a lack of senior opportunities may lead to approaches from other clubs. Richardson said he was confident St Kilda's communication with McCartin would work in the club's favour when it came to keeping the forward, but also said he hoped that McCartin wasn't content playing in a sub-elite competition.

We'd be disappointed if our guys who go back to VFL level aren't frustrated," Richardson said on Friday as the Saints trained at Sandringham's Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

"If they're happy running around in the VFL and they think that's their lot in life, then they're not made of the right stuff.

"Whether it's Dan McKenzie, who's been really strong for a long time, [Tom] Hickey, who's injured but went back, we'd be disappointed if he didn't want to get back in the team.

hopefully kicks a bag this weekend.

still it is good he needs to earn his spot and competition is fierce for the forwards. Good place to be.

He'll get his chance - just needs to take it when he does.

When we drafted him we did not know that Membrey will be as good as he is now. We have Josh and few young smalls.
I heard there are interest in Paddy from some clubs, while he has currency we should trade him and get a Top 5 draft and then use that to get a another established player.
Worst come worst we have Tom Marshall in Sandy who is pretty close to get a AFL chance.

Paddy is a no1 draft pick. Marshall whose first name is actually Rowan and not Tom, is a rookie who the Saints handed a life line after he was overlooked in three previous drafts.

They are not in the same ball park when it comes to talent

No way Richo should play Paddy unless he can kick multiple goals for Sandy irrespective what that flog Barrett writes.

I just do not get the knock on McCartin

He has already shown us he has everything it takes to succeed

Simply, at present, Roo playing as a forward is keeping him out

Once Roo is given an around the ground Licence again McCartin is an automatic selection

And, post Roo, he is the focal point in our attack

As horrible as it sounds, the saints might eventually have to take a north melbourne type approach to our veterans, for the long term good of the side.

Which ones, and who replaces them? Roo has to be untouchable.

We only have two blokes over 30 don't we? Both of which have been the difference in a win or loss at times this year.

Have friends who went to Paddy's folks wedding.

Paddy was well and truly in the oven by that stage.

Not that there is anything wrong with that

We already have. Now that Dempster has retired we have 3 players who have had their 30 th birthday. North has 3 such players.

GWS has 7 such players.

Dogs have 5.

Hypothetical - If Geelong (or any other team), came to us and offered a top 5 pick and a top 10 pick for Paddy I would take it. Imagine what Baines would be able to do during trade week with picks 5 and 10 (Paddy's picks), pick 4 (Hawthorn's pick) pick 14 (our own pick if we finish 5th) and our future 2018 first pick. :D

Gee some of you have no patience. Monster forward targets like Paddy take time to develop. I still think he's a good chance of making it, but he's not playing well enough at the moment to force out either Bruce or Membrey. If he's as good as some of you think, this will happen fairly soon.

As for those putting forward the idea of resting or (quelle horreur) retiring Riewoldt and playing McCartin: unless you are privy to medical information about Riewoldt's injuries, you're just emitting hot air. It might well be that Riewoldt has the sort of injury/injuries that goes better when he plays than when he doesn't. Terry Lamb, a champion rugby league player for the Bulldogs in Sydney, hobbled around in daily life and was unable to train for the last few years of his career. But, with some physio and pain-killers before each game, he turned out week after week and managed to captain a premiership-winning team in 1995.

I wouldn't rule out Riewoldt playing in another GF before he retires (please God).

And then perhaps we could recruit Fyfe, Martin, Kelly, Rockliff, Wright, Lionel Messi, Superman and the Hulk and fit them all within our salary cap!

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Josh Bruce needs to lift if he is to keep his place and keep Paddy out. He has kicked 11 this year from 7 games.
