But its nice to have someone who can lower their eyes and do something different. 23 possies is damn solid. He starts out of wing a fair bit but quickly pushes his way into the middle. I've always loved his neat disposal and creativity. IF he keeps playing AFL he will get better and better as he adjusts to the speed and then should be able to crack the play open regularly. He and Billings have a great chemistry that will get better the more they play.
gotta agree with the "composure"

like some action movie where the lead actor never has a hair out of place and everyone is dishevelled and falling all over themselves around him

Looks like he can be a really good player !

Sinclair developing, could he be our version of a Sam Mitchell - the link that creates space for others through vision and precise kicking. Look at how those Hawk players who used to run on To Mitchell's largesse into space he created for them are doing without him.
SInclair has those Mitchell like qualities.

I think he's looked very good, and that goes back three years when we were all singing his praises... his evolution as a VFL mid was important last season.

He is clever, creative, tough and polished... of course his composure is his trademark.

It's funny, if one of our highly touted mids had two games of 20+ with effectiveness.... we'd be shaming anyone who dare doubt their potential to be a champion?

Minch too, has played his difficult role as a small forward

I heard Armo on radio during the week and he said he'd have to regain form through the VFL. He understands he will need to work hard to impress, but I have no doubt that the selection committee would be questioning his reliability to stay healthy rather than his ability to do the job as a mid.

The other thing is that the season is long and a fit and firing Armo at the pointy end is a tasty thought. Some of our boys will need to be managed if we are a finals chance and if we aim to be contenders.

Very, very classy, poised kicking last night. I felt confident when he had the ball in hand.

He seems to have a telepathic sense with Billings. I must watch the replay to see how many times they found each other with passes & handball, it seemed a number of times they connected beautifully.

So you don't Armo and Dunstan in the midfield.
But how would Armo go as a small forward instead.

We need him at his best, club should do whatever they need to get him back to his best, even if it means giving time for his body to get right. We are a better team with him at his best

So you don't Armo and Dunstan in the midfield.

I love Armo but his place has been taken by a quicker, better running version in Jack Steele. Unfortunately, Armo never had great pace and I'm not sure he's got the speed to exert the pressure that a small-ish forward needs. I'd much prefer Minch in that role (even Wright) ... but never Lonie. Ever again.

In my mind - Dunstan is the odd one out. He neither accumulates the big numbers a mid needs nor is effective with the fewer possessions he gets. He's as slow as treacle, doesn't kick goals and doesn't appear to have a serious tank. I know he's a 21 yo who's had his head kicked in as our in and under but, I just don't see the upside in him. I'd like it to be different but I feel there's others whom are significantly more effective - the main one being Sinclair who adds outside run and excellent footskills (+ an ability to kick goals).

Its not that long ago when we had a midfield who were generally poor kicks. Now with Seb, Jack Sinclair and Jack Billings we have some very good kicks in the midfield. Even Jack Steven has improved his kicking.

You always turn your List to address deficiencies

Past that you put your best players on the ground - also acknowledging structure

That said. Armitage is among our very best players with some seeming to forget his tackling efforts including lunging chase downs

Armitage once he overcomes his current injury is an automatic selection

Dunstan is the one the recruiting of Steele and Stevens has put pressure on

But where that manifests is to the "small forward" and given Gresham and Sinclair's last 2 weeks the pressure in my mind transfers to Minchington and Wright

Then there is Acres running the whole ground and doing what he does forward

Then we have Freeman now starting to get there

Mind you everything is rosy when you are winning but different if you are not winning - and winning can sometimes cover deficiencies

Remember also that after our small forwards got chopped up by GWS and then WB in the early going last year we put bigger players in there hence Weller then Wright

So the tackles stuck and bodies were hit instead of just being chased

This also leads to our mids with bigger bodies going forward to hit the contests

Lots of well spaced sentences but god knows if you have a point to make or not.

I wonder if the coaches realised this when they chased Jack Steele and made sure we got him, not Norf.
And they saw a lot of Koby and said "he'll do".
These 2 men, along with Brown n Carlisle, are for me, the most inspired pick-ups of the last few years.
Steele n Stevens do the stuff that Armo always had 'potential' to do, but never delivered.
And things that Dunstan hasn't even given a glimpse of.

Listen, folks get mad when Armo n Luke are criticized, but for the team to take the next step, the club HAS to turn the list.
I was really sad when Tom Lee was cut, but for the good of the CLUB, there are hard choices to be made.
Take emotion out of it.

This. I noticed exactly the same thing. Uncanny how often they seemed to find each other.....

Best mates who started playing together in the under-9s team at Kew , later at the Kew Comets and then continued on through Scotch College and now to today. So they have a lot of playing history together and so it is therefore no surprise that they have such an excellent onfield understanding!

Sinclair is largely at the Saints due to Billings alerting the club.

From the Scotch College Website:
A special mention must be made of Jack Sinclair (12 GY, below), who was recently awarded the H I Cohen Trophy. This award is presented to the best all-rounder in the 1st XI Cricket team each season. The Cohen Trophy has been presented for more than 90 years, and includes three recipients who have gone on to play for Australia in Test cricket. Impressively, Jack has combined both 1st XI Cricket and 1st XVIII Football this year. He is regularly amongst our better performers in the football team and obviously has a bright sporting future ahead.

Jack Billings was of course the Captain of that 1st XVIII Football Team.

Agree with you wholeheartedly and some of the self acclaimed experts in here that were arguing otherwise through their silence are starting to understand this now too.
That's a strong list of 6 names that offer great balance of grunt, speed and skills.
Throw Billings on there sometimes too.

You could also add Mav and Gresh in cameos and hopefully Freeman. Then put in an A grader (Fyfe, Dusty, Kelly) and we have a serious midfield on our hands with a majority of them able to go forward also.

Sorry mate. Lee should never have been picked up in the first place. Never AFL standard.
