Mike Sheehan grades him down saying his impact on finals wasn't huge but that's downgrading him due to the fact he didn't win a premiership. He has played some massive finals games, the 2009 final against Collingwood stays in my mind.
When he finishes he will be all time great no doubt that's a given.
He won three finals off his own boot - '08 semi vs the Pies, '09 qualifying vs the Pies and '10 qualifying final vs the Cats.

He was also BOG in a fourth final ('04 semi vs the Swans) when he took a dozen marks in the wet and had the 2nd most possessions for St Kilda, despite the rain.

His record in finals (apart from Grand Finals) is excellent.
Roo almost helped us pinch 2010.

I agree, you are spot on. I had this discussion with Mike Sheehan...
Even the GF one was in the wet in 09 where he competed well and he did quite well in 2010.

What about the 09 preliminary final? Four goals, including the last two match winners? Great finals performer. Champion in every sense of the word. No argument. Mike Sheahan? You got this wrong.

2890 Marks now.

Also, if he can take another 29 Marks this year - it will be the 16th successive he's taken more than 100.

He's achieved that in all bar his very first year in which he only played 6 Games.

... and just 16 marks to equal Dempsey for most marks ever.
Will have to keep a count on Sunday.

After 8 marks against the Coasters Riewoldt needs just 8 more marks to tie Dempsey, 9 for the outright markologist title.

Will 20,000 Docker supporters jump the fence if he breaks the record?

So true. But he played in an era when the game was not all about playing keepings-off. Don't know what the stats were in Demps era but the number of possessions per game during Roo's career have increased dramatically.

Both are true champs, but Roo is our champ.
Dempsey was a great player , but he was the recipient of the kick out to the back pocket after almost every apponents goal, there were no real zone defenses employed in that period. The opposition didn't even bother , after he took the very short kick in, there was no real ground advantage.
I sometimes went to watch the Bulldogs train, it was part of the way they set up, and a standard training drill

Dempsey was a very good mark but Roo has taken far more contested marks and the majority in the most difficult position (CHF)

Robbo mentioned the marks taken by Roo at CHF as opposed to Dempsey roaming the grounds .. I saw Dempsey play often in 1981-2 at Arden Street and for contested marks only Loewe would stand in a room with him he was peerless in that department.
Different body required back then... Roo is a prolific marking machine, no player could consistently present over and over again on the lead like he.. his speed, tank and height made him unplayable at times... he would grind you into the first with his gut running and then take mark after mark but he was amazing on the stretch, below his knees, on the lead, in a pack, he could mark anyway.. much more weapons and versatile with his marking and athleticism to Dempsey who had great hands and pack mark..

Roo would bound away from Dempsey then.
Both behind Paul Callery.
Saw him at the footy the other week. Strong Saints man.

I reckon you can add the 09 AND 2010 prelim finals to that list. In 09 when we just couldn't score Roo stepped up kicking 4 out of 9 goals. In 2010 prelim we were playing crap up until halftime. After halftime, enter Roo. Game over.

Add to that 05 qualifying final in the wet - Banger aside, Roo was superb for a bloke his size in such a game in the wet. Banger fed him and he was incredible. 04 1st semi Roo and gehrig turned the tide our way. I still remember Roo marking and just turning instinctively and kicking to Gehrig without barely looking.

That's 7 finals he dominated.

The 04 prelim he played well, constantly presenting. His game in the 2010 drawn GF is underated in my book. We had about 35 inside 50's and he had 17 possessions, kicked 2 goals and took some crucial marks. It's simply because everyone expected him to win the game off his own boot with 3 pie defenders hanging off him. 09 he was desperately unlucky. Apparently pinged his groin the night before, and we had rain like Melbourne hasn't seen in a GF. He was so dominant physically that the cats had to rotate defenders on him all day. I am certain if it was dry day we would have won that game

Jumping the fence for the most career marks milestone would be funny. Knowing our luck, they'd do it at a crucial point in the game and the delay would halt our momentum, like in that 2004 PF.

Just the 3 marks today to Roo.
He looked jaded, though copping a knock from Sandilands early in the game didn't help.

Now needs just 5 to tie Dempsey.

12 marks today puts him 7 ahead of Dempsey subject to that asterisk about Dempsey's missing game.
If it can't be found then it doesn't exist so Roo has the record.

Of course if details of the missing game ever turn up then Roo could well still be up to 7 or 8 behind.
So hold off the celebrations till after The Druggie's game.

I wander when we will know about this....
He may need one more week..
His next little milestone is to beat Hudson and Carey who are on 727 goals..
That would be nice too...

Roo should get over 350 games and should get close to 800 goals by the time he finishes taking him into alltime status for games played and goals kicked. He will have the all time marks record as well which makes him an all time AFL great not just a Saints great. His last few years post 30 have been phenomenal, has anyone been that good this late in their career?
The fact he is a one team player, an ornament to loyalty and being a great leader and person he is just a legend!!
Plugger at his best was the greatest I ever saw but this man with Harvey are the 2 best Saints men in my time.
Lenny, Roo and Banger. Three of a kind imho.
