Anzac Day 1978
17 years before Collingwood and Essendon invented Anzac Day, we played the Cats on a Tuesday at Waverley. The video is short but worth looking at just to see the likes of George Young, Val Perovic and Doug Booth playing together.

Re: Anzac Day 1978
Memory tells me that we played the Tigers on Anzac day a few times before Collingwood and Essendon invented Anzac day. And I seem to recall we had a decent crowd, perhaps 60,000 at the game.
It really sucks that the AFL give these clubs such a commercial advantage.
Also not happy with the Collingwood - Melbourne exclusive on Queens birthday. They didn't exactly invent that one either.
Oddly enough, I don't have an issue with the Richmond - Essendon Dream time match. They invented that fair and square.

Also the colours - maybe we should have a Coca-Cola Cup - St Kilda (Zero) v Sydney (Full Sugar) - Maybe Coke should sponsor the Pride Cup!Toy Saint wrote:

Re: Anzac Day 1978
Great post. Thanks Kosi!
I absolute hate how the Filth and the Bummers have hijacked ANZAC Day and made it all theirs. What absolute frauds they are. Today's match is nothing but a battle for mediocrity.
George Young is one of my favourite players I never got to see play.

The c***s at the AFL also gift Hawks/Cats for Easter Monday.Toy Saint wrote:Memory tells me that we played the Tigers on Anzac day a few times before Collingwood and Essendon invented Anzac day. And I seem to recall we had a decent crowd, perhaps 60,000 at the game.

It's a crock.
Looks like Melbourne/Ninthmond will also be a lock for Anzac Eve for the next decade now.

Re: Anzac Day 1978
St Kilda can play Sydney on ANZAC Day in New Zealand.
Hang on, didn't we do that once?
Simply, post Howard, the nationalistic promotion of ANZAC Day has been a disgrace.
It is a day for reflection - including reflection on the folly and cost of War.
People lost their lives.
Others were maimed, physically and mentally.
Then we have our pm "secretly" in Afghanistan and Iraq with the media, where I thought "we", whoever "we" are, had won the Wars years ago but where we are now to commit more troops apparently.
Do we ever learn?
Lest we forget?

Great link, thanks for posting it.
Loved seeing George Young dominating Gary Malarkey.
Can't believe people on this site have likened Billings to Young
Not remotely similar and as yet Billings not fit to tie George's laces let alone be compared as a similar player.

Re: Anzac Day 1978
Funny but I thought many years ago I was once in a lockout crowd on Anzac Day at Princes Park against Caaaaaarlton.
I must be wrong as Collingwood and the Druggies have always owned that day.

Re: Anzac Day 1978
Enrico, I think you might me referring to that game back in 1992. What a heartbreaker that was. Bloody Caaaaarlton always seemed to find a way to beat us there for years and years. The only only vindication we got was with Plugger ironing out Hogg in the dying stages of the game and then not copping a suspension for his efforts.Enrico_Misso wrote:Funny but I thought many years ago I was once in a lockout crowd on Anzac Day at Princes Park against Caaaaaarlton.

That was StGeorge's last year.
A brilliant career all too short.
